When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox a few years back, the rights to Deadpool, Wolverine, and the whole X-Men franchise were returned to Marvel Studios. According to Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy, it has been confirmed that the movie would not ignore the X-Men’s intricate history with $6 billion 20th Century Fox Studios.

Deadpool 3 Director Has Opened up on Paying Homage to Fox’s Marvel Legacy

Disney acquired Fox in 2019 and acquired the rights to bring the X-Men into the MCU after Fox achieved enormous success with the X-Men franchise, including two of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool flicks.

Director Shawn Levy has said that the upcoming threequel will certainly pay homage to that period.

Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters; more specifically, iconic Marvel-of-the-Fox-era characters,” Shawn Levy told Slash Film.

“We’re not going to pretend: ‘Oh, we snap our fingers, and suddenly that Fox legacy doesn’t exist, and it shaped a lot of what we now know as the MCU.’ Fox also shaped Ryan’s career, Hugh’s career and my career. So there’s a lot of history there, and there’s a lot of Marvel history at Fox. And certainly that’s a part of our storytelling.”

Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, which will connect the plot to the early X-Men era.

Shawn Levy Hints at X-Men‘s Long-Awaited Inclusion into MCU

Despite having a rich history, the Fox-Marvel productions didn’t always generate as much excitement as the MCU movies. The issue for Deadpool 3 is to include the Fox legacy in a way that feels genuine and doesn’t detract from the established MCU plot.

In the history of the MCU franchise, the inclusion of the X-Men marks a significant development. Given Deadpool‘s penchant for bursting the fourth wall, Shawn Levy’s embracing of this history is apt.

Now that Marvel Studios has successfully incorporated Deadpool into the MCU, the character can explore Marvel’s extensive filmography in ways that were not previously feasible in the first two Deadpool movies.

Even the return of past X-Men actors to the MCU with Ryan Reynolds has been speculated. Halle Berry, who is most known for playing Storm, teased fans by sporting a haircut that alluded to a future comeback as the mutant character.

Fans can anticipate the combination of the old and the new, paying respect to the past while paving an intriguing future for the character.
