Peter Gallagher’s Yearning for the Original Splendor of While You Were Sleeping

Peter Gallagher was drawn to the original screenplay because it emphasized a more whimsical tone and brought out the charm of the characters. When While You Were Sleeping was first imagined, it pictured a blissful scene with a radiant glow that would have easily melted listeners’ hearts. In a Vulture interview, the actor, 68, expressed his satisfaction with the original concept for While You Were Sleeping. Sadly, he thought that the film’s brightness had been somewhat muted by artistic changes:

“What I remember about that movie is that we had a script that we all loved, and then we got to Chicago, and they changed it completely.”

Gallagher was vague about the specifics of the changes that had occurred, as he shared:

“They just changed a lot and they made everything sort of, in our eyes, less good. To credit Jon and the producers, they kinda got that, and gave us some freedom [to improvise].”

Even with the unfavorable last-minute alterations to the screenplay, Gallagher was excited to collaborate with the director and the ensemble.

“It was a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful cast. Peter Boyle, whom I’d admired as a young actor — I guess he played my dad in that, but we were more like brothers, because we were two Irish Catholic kids. He actually went to the Seminary, so he’s way more Irish Catholic than I was. We’d just hang out, walking around Chicago talking about all the trouble we were never going to get into. We just laughed our a**es off.”

At the box office, the movie brought in over $182 million, making it a critical and commercial success. The performances of Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock were praised.

Bullock’s Lucy is lonely and yearns for the large, boisterous family she never had, as well as the loving family she lost. She finds it even harder to be alone during Christmas because of the forced good cheer and family customs. However, she discovers more than just passionate love when she joins the Callaghan family—a family with new customs and unending love. This film’s core warmth—welcoming, empathetic, forgiving, and yes, sharing a kiss beneath the mistletoe with a dashing guy—is exactly what the holidays should be all about.
