Interestingly enough, despite having more than a few accolades under her name and respect in the industry, she has only been nominated for an Academy Award once in her career. It would seem that the actress also had to fight, tooth and nail, for the mention. Stone revealed that she was told some extremely harsh predictions by the Oscars.

Sharon Stone Was Nominated In The Wrong Category

Sharon Stone gave an interview with Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi, where she revealed some extreme information about the Film Academy that is deeply concerning. In 1995, the actress starred in a crime-thriller film by Martin Scorsese, called Casino.

Playing the lead female protagonist, the film received immense critical acclaim and helped her get a level of recognition that had not been seen since Basic Instinct.

“I was super surprised. I mean, they told me, ‘We can run for Supporting Actress, and you’ll win the Oscar.'” said Stone.

While the 1992 movie aided in her becoming the “Bombshell” of Hollywood, this film helped her establish herself as a truly talented actress. With this, it is no surprise that she was nominated for an Academy Award. However, the category that she was put in was bound to raise alarm bells.

Stone was told that she would run in the category of Best Supporting Actress, which she would surely win. This was quite surprising as she played the role of a lead character and not a supporting one.

Sharon Stone Was Told That She Would Not Amount To Much In Her Career

When Sharon Stone objected to being put in the wrong category for the sake of winning an award, she was told something truly surprising. The actress was told that she should not go for the Best Actress category as there would be no possibility for her to ever win an accolade of such high acclaim.

This is extremely surprising considering the fact that she became a cultural phenomenon after her role in Basic Instinct.

“‘You can’t win for leading lady, they’re never going to let you get a leading lady Oscar,’” Stone was told. She then stated, “I said, ‘But I am the leading lady in the film, so I want to run for leading lady.’ And they said, ‘But you won’t win.’ And I said, ‘I don’t care. I’m not in it to win it – that’s not the point here.’”

Stone elaborated, “The point is the actual work that I did, and I did the work for five months with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci and James Woods. I did the work, so I am going to be in the category of the work that I did. I’m not in it so that you’ll say, ‘Oh, OK, Sharon, you can have it. You can have the statue.’ No. I am in the lane that I drove in.”

Stone candidly told them that she did not care that she would not win an Academy Award in the Best Actress category, so long as she was put in the right one. Reducing the significance of her character in the Martin Scorsese film just for the sake of winning an award was not something she agreed with.

She did not care that she would not win such a prestigious award as long as her name was where it belonged. She wanted to be credited rightfully for the work she put in.
