Margot Robbie’s Barbie has been the talk of the town since its release in 2023. The film surprised everyone when it became the highest-grossing film of 2023. The film is also been recognized by several prestigious awards events. The film has been a historic victory for female-led films and the accolades continue to come for the makers of the film.
Hollywood has infamously not been kind to women and female-led blockbusters were rarely greenlit. Pitching something like Barbie was a difficult job for Robbie even during this time. Efforts to get a Barbie film made started back in the 90s by actress Sharon Stone which ended in disappointment.
Sharon Stone Made a Failed Attempt at a Barbie Film in the 90s
Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie may be the biggest film of 2023 but both women had a very difficult job in trying to get Warner Bros to come on board the film in the first place. A feature film based on a doll with no pre-existing models of success on film was a hard sell for Robbie and Gerwig. But they managed to convince WB and the rest is history
This was not the case back in the day when studios were very narrow-minded and female-led films were not considered commercially viable. Before Robbie, it seems actress Sharon Stone tried pitching a Barbie film in the 90s.
Commenting on America Ferrera’s Instagram post celebrating her win at the Critics Choice Awards, Stone revealed that she was mocked by the studio for such an idea and praised the efforts of all the makers for bringing this film to life. She wrote,
“I was laughed out [of] the studio when I came [with] the Barbie idea in the ’90s [with] the support of the head of Barbie. How far we’ve come. Thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.”
Along with the humongous love from audiences, the awards have been kind to the film, earning 6 wins at the recent Critics Choice Awards. The film is also expected to receive some big nominations at the upcoming Oscars.
Ryan Gosling Hasn’t Allowed His Kids To Watch Barbie Yet
Ryan Gosling was the ultimate highlight of the Barbie film and his hilarious yet endearing performance as Ken received unanimous love from audiences. The actor has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in many award events. However, he has not let his kids watch the film yet.
Talking to E! Online, Gosling revealed that he is not sure whether his kids should watch him as Ken yet while also stating that they have seen some parts of the film including one of the big musical numbers of the film. He said,
“I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken. I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that. It gets pretty crazy. They’ve seen little parts of it and they came to set one day when I did a big musical number.”
Gosling’s viral hit I’m Just Ken has already won Best Song at The Critics Choice Awards. There is a big chance that his song or Billie Eilish’s song What Was I Made For? wins in the same category at the Oscars.
