Hollywood has infamously not been kind to women and female-led blockbusters were rarely greenlit. Pitching something like Barbie was a difficult job for Robbie even during this time. Efforts to get a Barbie film made started back in the 90s by actress Sharon Stone which ended in disappointment.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie may be the biggest film of 2023 but both women had a very difficult job in trying to get Warner Bros to come on board the film in the first place. A feature film based on a doll with no pre-existing models of success on film was a hard sell for Robbie and Gerwig. But they managed to convince WB and the rest is history

This was not the case back in the day when studios were very narrow-minded and female-led films were not considered commercially viable. Before Robbie, it seems actress Sharon Stone tried pitching a Barbie film in the 90s.

Commenting on America Ferrera’s Instagram post celebrating her win at the Critics Choice Awards, Stone revealed that she was mocked by the studio for such an idea and praised the efforts of all the makers for bringing this film to life. She wrote,

Along with the humongous love from audiences, the awards have been kind to the film, earning 6 wins at the recent Critics Choice Awards. The film is also expected to receive some big nominations at the upcoming Oscars.
