From sitcoms to superhero movies, the concept of multiverse is now every director’s favorite, it seems. From the world of animation to Hollywood, multiverses are really popular nowadays. However, DCAU filmmakers are not pretty happy about this special concept turning into an everyday theme.

DC Animated Universe (DCAU) started in 1992 and ended in 2006. However, filmmakers are still using comics to make animated movies and fans are really positive towards these kinds of movies. Exploring a wide variety of characters and concepts is fun after all. But, it looks like the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths filmmakers never really wanted others to normalize the concept of the multiverse.

In an interview with The Beat, interviewer Taimur Dar sat down with Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths producer Butch Lukic, producer and screenwriter Jim Krieg, and director Jeff Wamester.

When Dar asked about the multiverse concept and how the filmmakers are looking towards it, Krieg answered with a disappointed tone on behalf of all three. He said:

“That has been the worst thing for us completely. When we started this, we felt like we had to explain the word ‘multiverse.’ Literally the entire movie of Justice Society is to explain that there’s an Earth-2. By the time the movie came out, there were three franchises that were doing the multiverse. I’m like, “Do you think they’ll understand? I guess so!” Now it’s in Rick and Morty and just everywhere.”

No doubt Krieg felt bad that it took so much effort on their part to apply the concept and now so many franchises are abusing it like it’s cakewalk.

Two of the Most Popular Franchises are Very Fond of the Multiverse Concept

After the concept of a multiverse was first put forward by DC’s Silver Age comics, it has become a cornerstone of the DC Universe across all forms of media. However, DC’s potential competitor, Marvel, isn’t letting the sand slip away from its hold either. Both franchises have successfully used the multiverse concept in their respective movies.

In the last couple of years to be specific, multiverse has been used more and more. On June 16, 2023, DC came to the theaters with Ezra Miller’s The Flash which had the concept of multiverse in it. In the same way, on May 6, 2022, Marvel hit the theaters with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Fans of DC and MCU were really surprised and happy with their favorite franchises coming forward with such a unique concept. Multiverse allowed these franchises to create and modify storylines according to their convenience. With the concept in hand, filmmakers found it easy to link different characters and bring them close to each other. Moreover, the multiverse helped the filmmakers to stretch the plots.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
