In an open letter addressed to Lionsgate, the trio comprising Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams from the 1999 blockbuster, The Blair Witch Project, are pushing for fairer compensation for their contributions. Another request on the table for Lionsgate was not only fair financial remuneration but also a sincere commitment to involve them in any future projects related to the Blair Witch franchise, as previously mentioned ensuring their input and consent. As they said,

“Meaningful consultation on any future ‘Blair Witch’ reboot, sequel, prequel, toy, game, ride, escape room, etc., in which one could reasonably assume that Heather, Michael & Josh’s names and/or likenesses will be associated for promotional purposes in the public sphere.”

Adding to their requests, the trio also advocates for a grant “to an unknown/aspiring genre filmmaker to assist in making their first feature film. This is a GRANT, not a development fund, hence @lionsgate will not own any of the underlying rights to the project.”

This letter follows the announcement of the recent collaboration between the production house and Blumhouse for a reboot, it’s also crucial to highlight that Lionsgate wasn’t involved in the production or distribution of the original 1999 film. Instead, it gained ownership of the property through its acquisition of Canadian independent film distributor Artisan Entertainment in 2003.

Despite this, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance of the actors taking action. Back in 2002, they filed a lawsuit against Artisan Entertainment for the unauthorized use of their identities in the studio’s 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.
