CM Punk’s Unexpected Encounter with John Cena at WrestleMania 40

The rivalry between CM Punk and John Cena is among the most intense in the professional wrestling industry. Saying that, they both hold quite the wrestling resume. Their on-air emotions frequently mirrored their private feelings, and their chemistry was evident between 2009 and 2013!

But watching how perceptions of people can evolve over time is fascinating.

During an interview with the IMPAULSIVE podcast, Cena shared his thoughts on how his WWE persona has changed over time. He highlighted how fans’ perceptions had changed during his tenure by drawing a comparison between himself and the legendary superhero, Superman.

Cena explained:

“John Cena in the WWE existence is quite easy for me to define: Superman. And I don’t mean like stronger than a train, faster than a bullet, whatever. I mean, Superman acts with a moral virtue. Superman has a moral code.”

However, as Cena acknowledged, things have changed now. The recent image of CM Punk and Cena laughing together may lack the dramatic flair of a Cena vs. The Rock showdown, but it speaks volumes about the bond that the former two superstars share.

Witnessing two fierce competitors set aside their differences and share a laugh is a moment that reminds us of the human side of wrestling in an industry known for its rivalries and drama.

While the general public may have been more interested in Cena’s matches with Dwayne Johnson, true wrestling fans know that Cena vs. Punk faceoffs truly captured the hearts and minds of the WWE Universe.

Examining The Rock and John Cena’s Feud

Fans get a behind-the-scenes look at the legendary rivalry between John Cena and The Rock—who also happen to be two of Hollywood’s most charitable stars—in an exclusive sneak peek from the second season of the A & E show (via Outlook).

The video began with the voice of an announcer over old WWE footage that emphasized the importance of these two icons from their time, presenting them as two of the greatest wrestling superstars of all time, facing off against each other. Cena was rising within WWE at the same time that Johnson, who was the face of the company in the 1990s before making his way into Hollywood, entered the film industry.

Cena publicly chastised his predecessor in public and off-screen, leading to a much-awaited confrontation in 2012 and a rematch the following year. Since The Rock had not entered the ring in eight years, Cena started to openly doubt The Rock’s dedication to the wrestling industry in 2011.

A vintage clip featuring The Rock calling Cena an “idiot with confidence” and remarking that he is “talking a big game” set the tone for their highly anticipated Wrestlemania match. Notwithstanding their years-long verbal altercations and their unforgettable in-person conflicts, Cena has later shown nothing but respect for The Rock.

After a break, Cena returned to the ring in 2021 and stated that he hoped The Rock would follow suit. The Rock and Roman Reigns went on to defeat Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in a tag match as the main event of WrestleMania XL’s first night.

So while a John Cena vs. The Rock face-off may be the stuff of legend, it’s the unanticipated moments of unity and camaraderie between Cena and  CM Punk that make wrestling truly special.

And as fans, we can only hope for more moments like this in the future!
