Although the odds were against him moving into the main event after losing on Night One, WrestleMania 40 couldn’t have ended on a higher note for Cody Rhodes. But while Rhodes finally got to finish his story after years of hardship and was ecstatic to become the new Universal Champion, he didn’t back down from commending Roman Reigns’ historic title reign.
While they haven’t been on the nicest terms over the past two years, this hasn’t stopped the American Nightmare from acknowledging his arch-rival’s contribution to the realm of pro-wrestling.
Cody Rhodes Wishes He Could Be Half the Champion Roman Reigns Was
Even though Roman Reigns had the upper hand moving onto the main event of Night Two, as it was a Bloodline rules match, thankfully, Cody Rhodes had some legends backing him this time. Courtesy of surprising appearances from John Cena and the Undertaker, Rhodes was finally able to pin Reigns for the Universal title, ending his historic 1316 days reign.
While the Tribal Chief fell inches short of breaking Hulk Hogan’s record of 1474 days, the American Nightmare had no problem branding Reigns’ title reign as the greatest in all of sports entertainment. Even though he might not agree with the Big Dog’s ways of handling the championship, Rhodes wishes he could be half the champion Reigns was.
He said:
“Obviously, he and I are not good friends, but that’s the greatest championship reign in sports… and entertainment… I still hope I can be half the champion that he was”
It wasn’t Rhodes alone who was raving about Reigns’ impact on the business, as even though fans were rooting for the American Nightmare to win, they did acknowledge the Tribal Chief’s contribution.
Fans Hail Roman Reigns For Getting WWE Through Its Darkest Period
Prior to hitting it big following his heel turn, Reigns struggled to connect with fans as a babyface for years, often considered the lowest point in the company’s history.
But both WWE and Reigns did succeed to come out the other side, after hitting a roadblock in the late 2010s, and since then, things have only kept on elevating for them.
Not only Reigns has gone on to become the next big thing for the company, which WWE struggled to create in the mid and late-2010s, but ratings and numbers also kept on spiking. Although it can’t be said for sure what awaits next for Reigns in his WWE run, with the pro-wrestling business now better than ever, his title reign will go down in history as one if not the greatest of all time.
