FX’s The Bear was certainly loved by fans, but none had imagined the show would end up bagging an achievement in comedy. The show’s massive success is reflected in the fan reviews, flaunting a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but not so much with the critics though. However, the show’s recent success at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards irked some fans.
Saturday night witnessed the commencement of the 2023 Emmy Awards, originally scheduled for September but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood. Nevertheless, shows like The Last of Us and The White Lotus winning multiple awards were anticipated but one of the four wins of The Bear failed to coincide with the fans’ understanding.
The Bear wins an Emmy Award for comedy
The 2022 FX-produced drama stars Jeremy Allen White as the compelling chef Carmen Berzatto who takes over his family restaurant, the Original Beef of Chicagoland after his brother’s death. The show presents the struggling realities of running a business in the restaurant industry. While fans highly relate to the plot and are deeply involved with the happenings, they don’t feel it fits in rightly as a comedy.
Hence, among the four Emmy Award wins the show bagged this season, The Bear also won an award for ‘Best Casting for a Comedy.’ Fans were bewildered upon hearing the news and took to social media to chip in their insights. Questions were raised on the comical elements of the series.
The Bear seeks to merge the heightened drama with comedy, as the events unfold in the grieving family. Based in Chicago, even Season 2 of the show impressively kept viewers engaged, being regarded as one of its best. Nevertheless, after the news traveled through social media platforms, netizens were not convinced of the show’s achievement in comedy.
The Bear is not all that funny to fans
A post shared by Discussing Film on X announced The Bear’s recent win in the genre, without any additional details of other wins. Presumably, the FX show’s win as a comedy series was surprising for the sphere. Likewise, fans flooded the comments with a range of insights, although undivided on the collective viewpoint on it failing as a comedy.

I didn't even know The Bear was a comedy, I just watched the first episode, I think about 20 minutes from the first episode, I thought it was some drama and boring, and I stopped watching it to watch other movies and series, but I think about watching it again some day.

Other wins bagged by The Bear were in the categories of Best Sound Editing and Animation, Best Sound Mixing, and Picture Editing for a Single-Camera Comedy Series, per Deadline. The greatest show at Night 1 of the Emmys was undoubtedly, HBO’s The Last of Us, winning a grand eight Emmys.
