After the success of Dune: Spice Wars, many are now eagerly looking forward to Dune: Awakening. It will be a survival MMO game set in Frank Herbert’s sci-fi universe. With all the hype around, it is evident that Funcom will have another hit game under its belt.

The gameplay is set to be interesting, where players will get to explore, survive, and eventually conquer the planet of Arrakis. Like after games in the genre, surviving in this game will not be easy. Players will be placed in an open world, where survival depends on adapting to challenges.

Dune: Awakening will adapt a feature from the lore

Players need to overcome several challenges while exploring the desert planet of Arrakis. The hostile factions and other players will be a constant threat. However, there is another challenge in the game that the players need to be mindful of. This is none other than the desert environment itself.

Apart from learning to survive in the desert, and staying away from sandworms, players will also have to keep an eye out for the Coriolis storm. These are massive sandstorms that the game borrowed from the novel and the book. According to the lore, this storm is known to sweep everything in its path.

The developers posted a message on X, explaining how the Coriolis storm would work in the game,

“ This will bury old locations and unearth new points of interest, providing new opportunities and encounters to discover, and new spice fields to fight over for control and dominance”

These storms will occur every week, which means that the players will have to constantly improve their gear and tactics to keep up with it. While the storm will unearth new opportunities in the game, players need to be very careful of it.

If a player is stuck in the deep desert during the Coriolis storm, they will drown in the sand and will be kicked out of the game. Therefore, to avoid this scenario, players will be given a warning. The warning will come in the form of changes in the sky, and players need to know that the storm is on the way.

When will Dune: Awakening come out?

As of now, two main trailers have been shown for the game. The first one was the Pre-Alpha Teaser trailer and the second was the Survive Arrakis trailer. In the Pre-Alpha Teaser trailer, we got to see what the game will offer visually. The Survive Arrakis trailer revealed some elements of the gameplay.

Eventually, the release of the game will depend on how the closed beta test goes. If the beta test goes according to plan, the game might drop via early access in 2024. However, if the beta tests reveal that more work needs to be done, the game’s release might slip into 2025.
