Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has been an integral part of the MCU since its initial years. The character made his debut in his first Thor film and went on to become an important member of the Avengers and the eventual defeat of Thanos. The Infinity Saga was a great showcase of the character’s tragic arc, losing everything in his life, including his father, mother, brother, and even his planet.

The God of Thunder proved to be a great team member interacting and forming alliances with other heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and Hawkeye. But it seems Marvel initially had other plans for the character, which would have isolated the character from the aforementioned characters.

The Screenplay of Thor Was Initially Set in The Vikings Era

The newly released book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios has shed light on many prospects of the making of the MCU and how the makers and producers developed multiple projects for the franchise. In one of the chapters of the book, it discusses the approach to developing Chris Hemsworth’s first Thor film and how the character could be assimilated into the larger MCU.

As detailed by the book, it seems Marvel Studios initially had a totally different plan for the character than what audiences got to see on screen. An excerpt from the book reads as follows,

“Marvel Studios had already commissioned a Thor screenplay, set among Vikings during the Middle Ages, but the producers wanted the thunder god to be able to team up with Iron Man, so they needed to find a way to make the character work in twenty-first-century Midgard (that is, Earth).”

Marvel eventually set the screenplay of the film in the current era and thus it enabled the character to interact with other members of the Avengers. The initial script would have alienated the character from what was going on in the current era and it wouldn’t have been possible to bring the heroes together. Thus, a wise decision was made by the makers to change the screenplay to fit the larger MCU narrative.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder proved to be a financially successful venture for the MCU. But the film was considered a lackluster follow-up to the amazing Thor: Ragnarok. Now, a new rumor suggests that the studio has begun work on a fifth Thor film.

This comes from a post on X by a user called Thor Updates who credits popular scooper Daniel Richtman as the source of the rumor.

The post also seems to suggest that Marvel is searching for a new director instead of Taika Waititi who directed the last two Thor films. If this is the case, a change in vision and approach will be refreshing to see.

It remains to be seen if this rumor turns out to be true and whether Waititi will direct this potential fifth film or hand over the directing duties to someone else.
