The Santa Clause is a classic Christmas film, despite having come out more than three decades ago. Featuring Tim Allen, who because a legend in this genre because of this, the film certainly played an important role in the lives of many when it comes to their feelings towards the festive cheer. This film managed to find a way to entertain both its younger and older audiences, finding a balance with its humor. The film showed a bright and safe environment for its audiences, having a unique, but satisfying premise and conclusion.
With this, it is surprising to find out that the original concept of the script of this film was extremely different compared to its final product. During an interview where he was promoting his recent series, The Santa Clauses, Allen revealed that the original concept of this movie was even more bold than the film ended up being, which was already extremely out there.
The Santa Clause Was A Lot Different
Tim Allen recently gave an interview with ScreenRant where he went into great detail about his recent projects, the newest season of The Santa Clauses, a series from the franchise that all started with the 1994 film, The Santa Clause. During this, the actor was asked the question of when he had read the script of this film first, and had he ever thought that years later, he would still be a part of this franchise. The actor replied that never in his wildest dreams did he think something like this would happen. He then talked about his actual thoughts when he read the script for the first time.
“Wow. That’s a loaded question, and no, no, no, no, no. Reading the original script—it was a very, very bold comedy. Disney, in all their wisdom, toned it down a bit. It was a little racier upfront, meaning that, I think, in the original script, I actually hurt Santa on the roof. Let’s put it that way. I thought it was really funny. They didn’t want to start a movie hurting Santa Claus, so it turned into a soft movie”
Allen explained that the original versions of the film took quite a lot of risks and made some questionable choices that could be considered bold. Explaining this, he stated that this script, earlier, called for his character to beat up Santa Claus on a rooftop. He explained that this was an approach that was extremely out there considering the fact that this is a film that is catering to a younger audience and would therefore force it have have a slightly darker theme.

It Was Turned Into Something More Heartfelt
Tim Allen then went on to say that the director of this movie, John Pasquin, understood that this approach would not sit well with the masses and decided to adopt a different approach. This resulted in a completely different, much better film, in his opinion. He explained that the director, as well as the studio itself, Disney, turned a movie trying to make a joke into something completely different.
“The director, John Pasquin, turned it into a very emotional, wonderful story. It lifted it past a situation comedy about Santa and into a wonderful story about Christmas and giving and forgiveness and all of these themes. And no, I did not expect that. When they pushed to do another series, it was more like chapters of a book.”
He explained this, stating that the film turned much more three-dimensional and had a lot more personality. He also added that it was a lot deeper and forced its audiences to feel something, as well as learn a thing or two about the Christmas spirit.
