The director of 2018’s Beautiful Boy, Felix van Groeningen, once revealed that the filming of the first few scenes was very intense for actor Timothée Chalamet, who played Nicolas “Nic” Sheff in the movie. The scenes involved his character being hospitalized for a drug overdose, so Chalamet was required to lose weight. He managed to do so, but it came with some consequences, as the actor once recalled that there were several “doctor visits” and “close calls” while filming those scenes. He said (via IMDb),

“Your mind knows you’re acting. But when you drop twenty pounds and you are under a rain machine for eight takes in a T-shirt, your body doesn’t know you’re acting.”

Chalamet lost 18 pounds and also had a consultant and doctor on set because he was determined to give an authentic performance. Actor Will Poulter was initially shortlisted for the role but Chalamet’s auditions captivated the filmmakers.
