Tom Cruise is making waves in the industry with his action roles. Even at the age of 61, there is no chance of him slowing down. Recently, he was seen riding a motorcycle off a cliff, flying off the bike, and gliding parachutes to the ground in Mission: Impossible’s seventh installment.

With this, it’s for sure that he’s the greatest action movie star across the globe. And not with his role as Ethan Hunt in M:I franchise, but as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun and Jack Reacher in the franchise of the same name, he has even proved it. But is he pivoting away from the genre?

In an interview with The Independent, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible co-star Simon Pegg, who has played Benji Dunn in the franchise since the third installment, made a revelation.

He said that Cruise might take other creative opportunities while praising his superstardom. When Pegg was asked about the possibility of working with Cruise after the Mission: Impossible franchise eventually ends. He said: “I don’t know.” Pegg then continued:

“I love working with Tom, and he’s really good fun to work with but I get the feeling that when Tom goes off and does other things, it’ll be a completely different thing. He has a whole other age to come in his career. He’s a very good actor, a very, very good actor — as we’ve seen in ‘Magnolia’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’… I think when he finally stops jumping off shit, he’ll have a third act. And yes, it’d be nice to be a part of that.”

Although the Hollywood star put the record straight that he has no plans of leaving the franchise. But his close collaborator and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director teased that they are working together on a “gnarlier” film. And this would mark an exit of Cruise’s franchise roles.

The director, Christopher McQuarrie, said of the secretive project in 2022 on Light the Fuse podcast, “It’s kind of under wraps. It has neither a fuse nor a fuselage.” He added:

“It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse. And yet it takes everything we’ve learned on this journey, which is making movies more and more about emotion and real emotional experiences.”

Deadline reports that Cruise and McQuarrie are developing three movies altogether. One of them is said to be a song-and-dance musical. Another is an original action movie. And one is an untitled film with McQuarrie and director Doug Liman, which will be for NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
