It seems the way Issa López has handled True Detective as a writer/director has pleased HBO. That’s why the crime anthology has been renewed for a fifth season, with the Mexican director taking over as showrunner once again. (López also inked an overall contract with the network.)
Fans of the highly regarded series can now finally relax and get ready for another exciting season of murder, mystery, and intrigue after much excitement and anticipation. Known for her distinct storytelling style and talent for developing interesting stories, López gained applause as the showrunner for the fourth season.
For the entire fourth season of HBO’s acclaimed series, she served as both director and co-writer. Viewers can anticipate a new season full of surprises that will keep them on the edge of their seats with her at the helm once again.
The Fifth Season of True Detective is set to Return With Issa López
For a fifth case, HBO will be hosting True Detective. Following the fourth season of True Detective: Night Country, which received the highest ratings ever for a TV series (see Dexerto), the network has renewed the show for a fifth season, once again with Issa López in charge. She even expresses her desire to return to the sinister world of the crime anthology series, attributing her eagerness to work again with HBO Chief Drama Francesca Orsi and Head of Programming Casey Bloys.
López made the following statement (via Deadline):
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
In addition to the upcoming True Detective season, Lopez has inked a new multiyear overall deal with HBO, which will allow her to produce new, exclusive content for both the streaming service and Max.
Night Country returned after a five-year break with both critical and commercial success. It has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now. The upcoming season’s plot and cast have not yet been revealed, but it is expected to center on an all-new team of investigators cracking a new case, just like every other season.
What Can We Expect from Season Five of True Detective?
Almost nothing is known about the True Detective season 5 cast, plot, or release date, as the renewal is still fresh off the press. But given the history of the program and the news that Issa López is returning, some assumptions regarding the fifth season can be made with confidence.
Well, every season since the show’s debut in 2014 has followed two mismatched detectives with sinister pasts as they investigate eerily intricate crimes; season 5 ought to continue this trend. Although Jodie Foster and Kali Reis might not return, the show should still draw A-list actors because each season has brought in a fresh cast.
Though they were not necessary to the story, the references to Rust Cohle, Carcosa, and the Tuttle family from True Detective: Night Country were included to keep the show in line with the shared universe. Also, the return of López, who served as executive producer and wrote and directed all six episodes of Night Country, suggests that she will remain deeply involved on all fronts.
Not to mention that HBO is happy with the result and thinks López will stay at the head of the series. Considering how quickly the show was renewed, True Detective season 5 might premiere as early as late 2025.
