The Oscars 2024 were full of surprises and had all the nominees as well as non-nominees constantly at the edge of their seats. However, throughout all the people who were in utter excitement and awe of everyone who won, Martin Scorsese was not involved.
If anything, the filmmaker seemed like he couldn’t care less about the program and had only graced the event out of formality. At the recently held ceremony for the 96th Academy Awards, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, even those who were left behind in the nomination stage. But the renowned Martin Scorsese wasn’t one of them.
While others celebrated their own and others’ wins, The Departed director just sat there with a face that made it evident that he had seemingly zero interest in the ceremony whatsoever, even when he was nominated in more than one categories.
For those who may not know, Scorsese was nominated at the Academy Awards 2024 for his critically acclaimed masterpiece, Killers of the Flower Moon in the Best Picture and Best Director categories.
But seeing him so indifferent about the procession taking place around him, fans couldn’t help but wonder what the reason behind such lack of interest was. For one, it could be his hopelessness in the ceremony because of all the times he has been snubbed.
After all, as heartbreaking as it may sound, it’s only true. In the past almost four and a half decades i.e. from 1980 to 2023, Scorsese has earned sixteen whopping nominations. However, out of all of those, he has only scored one win.
For the record, he was nominated in the Best: Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Picture categories for his films Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman.
However, judging from his one win in all the sixteen nominations, fans can’t help but understand just why Scorsese looked like he only came for formality at the Oscar Awards 2024.
