Enabling RTX breathes fresh life into the game.

In a video that showcases how lovely the game can truly look, Orbifold Studios has made use of Nvidia’s powerful tools to enhance and improve the game’s overall look and feel.

According to the trailer’s description, the modders have made an attempt at rebuilding assets/materials with Physically Based Rendering (PBR) properties. This adds depth to geometric details and includes complete ray tracing.

Nvidia and Orbifold Studios further write about how the project shapes up as a Half-Life 2 remaster:

Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project is a community-made remaster of Half-Life 2 being developed by Orbifold Studios using NVIDIA RTX Remix, the ultimate modding platform.

The open beta for the mod begins on 22nd January, and you can learn more about it on the official website. Nvidia also mentions the new RTX Remix app, which works as a central hub for creating new RTX mods for older games. This allows modders to do different things like import game clips/screenshots and enhance existing game assets.

Half-Life 2’s Legacy Seems to Live on

Two decades later, Half-Life 2 still looks great.

The RTX remaster for Half-Life 2 is merely a scratch of all that the game can be. Gamers both young and old have something to look forward to when old games receive genuine remasters and new games make use of the best kinda tech. While much of this new mod may not add actual content to the game, the fact that it invites a new generation of gamers to try out a classic is good news for the community.

Ever since its launch in 2004, Half-Life 2 has received immense critical acclaim. To this day, the game’s Steam page holds ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews. The game set a high standard for studios who wanted to try a genre that’s still fresh. A linear story progression where the world can react to everything you do. Your vicinity feels like a large canvas of experimental gunplay and mechanics.

Despite all the new games that have been coming out, and creators putting in their best efforts; it’s tough to bring out a game that’s as inviting and engaging as Half-Life 2. Moreover, the upcoming RTX mod for the game will take this experience to a new height, proving that great games can stand the test of time without losing their charm.
