MAPPA Studios, known for some of the biggest anime series of recent years like Jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland Saga, Chainsaw Man, Hells Paradise, Attack on Titan, etc., has earned the praise of another prominent Japanese animation studio, Studio Pierrot. The producer of the studio recently admitted that MAPPA might have an upper hand in the anime industry.
Pierrot itself is a big name in the anime industry, with series like Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Black Clover, and Tokyo Ghoul under its belt. However, the producer of the studio believes that MAPPA might be better at producing high-quality work in a short period of time. He also gave an example of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen.
He has also clarified that the studio is in the process of branding the company to introduce a new perspective, which will help them focus on both long-term and short-term series.
Studio Pierrot’s Producer Praises MAPPA Studios for Jujutsu Kaisen
In an interview with Men’s Non-No, Yoshihiro Tominaga (Studio Pierrot’s Producer) recently pointed out that producing high-quality anime series and dividing them into seasons has become the current trend among animation studios. However, Pierrot has always been known for its high-quality long-term series.
Tominaga stated:
“While Pierrot has a long history and is highly regarded for consistently delivering high-quality works, I think we are also seen as a company that specializes in long-term series. Of course, there is value in having people enjoy our animation without interruption over a long period, such as two to three years, but we are not good at producing high-quality works such as Jujutsu Kaisen in a short period of time.”
While talking about high-quality series that are produced in a short period of time, Tominaga gave the example of Jujutsu Kaisen and MAPPA Studios. He even stated that Studio Pierrot is not as good as them and certainly needs to work on balancing both long-term and short-term anime series in the future.
Yoshihiro Tominaga Talks About Branding Studio Pierrot
While explaining the merits of Studio MAPPA with series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Tominaga revealed that it is now time for Studio Pierrot to reconsider some things in terms of production and focus on branding the company, while emphasizing the production of long-term series and balancing its strengths in producing short-term series.
Tominaga explained:
“In light of the current situation, where it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue to produce the high quality demanded of us without interruption, I believe that the time has come for us to consider how our production company should operate and what structure we should have in place.”
He further said:
“I believe that Pierrot should continue to emphasize the production of long-term series as it has in the past, while at the same time balancing its strengths in producing high-quality works in a short period of time. To achieve this, we also want to focus on branding the company.”
The studio has already established a new section called Pierrot Films to tackle this problem, and the first series they will work on, or probably have already started working on, is Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3. This is a good thing for Bleach fans, as they will get even better quality animation than in the previous season.
