During a recent interview, director Doug Liman, who helmed the first installment, provided a crucial update about the sequel. Liman confirmed that the second part was still in the pipeline and revealed the challenges that were preventing the project from moving into production. Here is what Liman had to say about a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
Edge of Tomorrow Director Doug Liman Provides Update on Sequel

A second installment was reportedly planned as early as 2015, but development on the project has been delayed for numerous reasons. In July 2024, Liam sat down for a conversation with Collider, sharing a major update regarding the sequel.
I would never do that and Tom would never do that and Emily would never do that we have too much pride in our work to ever ever take the easy bait.
Liman made the above statement explaining the several delays the sequel has faced, adding that the creative team did not want to move forward without a solid idea and a good script to back it up.
At the same time, Liman confirmed that it would make sense to make the sequel now as both Cruise and Blunt are at the peak of their popularity. As a result, he admitted that he was spending a lot of time trying to crack the concept and script for the sequel, confirming that the second installment was still in the cards.
Doug Liman Reveals the Real Challenge of Making Edge of Tomorrow 2
During the same interview, Liman admitted that while there was intent to make a sequel to the popular sci-fi film, time travel films were extremely tricky. He stated since time travel was a fictional concept, grounding it in realism was a major challenge.

The director highlighted issues in the third act as one of the primary reasons the sequel still doesn’t have a locked script. He said:
Because it’s hard to figure out a third act in a movie with time travel.
Meanwhile, Liman confirmed that he was working hard on the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, simultaneously trying to figure out the concept and crack the script with a compelling third act.
Liman also stated that he did not want to take the easy way out with the script since the sequel was almost guaranteed box office success because of the star cast and the positive reactions to the first installment. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Liman crafts the second installment and when it comes to fruition.
