Barbie was released in theaters alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy. The two films made waves at the theaters, leading to the ‘Barbenheimer’ cultural phenomenon, where the audiences were encouraged to watch both films as a double feature. Margot Robbie was joined by Murphy on Variety’s Actors on Actors segment, where they discussed their projects.

Towards the end of the discussion, the Batman Begins actor asked Robbie the inevitable question about a sequel project. The Suicide Squad actress, feeling obligated to respond after inquiring about the Peaky Blinders movie earlier in the interview, couldn’t provide a definitive answer due to her conflicting opinions.

Robbie shared that she and the crew put their everything into the movie and it turned out great. She particularly took pride in the fact that Barbie was an original movie, rather than a sequel or a remake. But at the same time, she also revealed that she would do anything to get back to the joyful set of Barbie. The Wolf of Wall Street actress told Murphy in the Variety segment:

“I’m like, we put everything into that movie. And it’s so good. And I was also so proud of the fact that it was an original. It wasn’t a sequel or a prequel or a remake, which is getting rarer and rarer these days. That part of me almost, I’m like, ‘Oh no, if we do a Barbie 2 then we just… I don’t know.’ But at the same time, I would do anything to be back on the set. Like playing Barbie is the best. It’s just so joyful. So, it’s not no.”

Robbie also added that she enjoyed her time with director Greta Gerwig and co-star Ryan Gosling. It appears that it’s not just Robbie who wants to return to Barbie Land.

In an interview with People Magazine, Gerwig shared that she hopes her film would be the catalyst for a plethora of Barbie movies. She added that Barbie Land was so beautiful that she would love to visit the world of Barbie again. Gerwig shared that there was a tone, humor, and joy that worked for her film. The Lady Bird director told People:

“[I hope Barbie] is the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies. There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”

Gerwig earlier shared that she never planned for a sequel while making the film. Warner Bros. and Mattel might be inclined to pursue one, considering the massive success of the film. However, living up to the original will be a challenge, as pointed out by Robbie. Barbie is now available for rent on Apple TV+.
