“We really wanted it to be…”: Not Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Originally Wanted a Jim Carrey Superhero in the Movie

Brie Larson made it her mission to destroy the cutout of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s still from True Lies when her character crash-landed on Earth. Getting scared by the cutout, she proceeds to destroy it to shreds.

The original cutout, however, wasn’t supposed to be of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was going to destroy Jim Carrey’s face from the actor’s iconic 1994 movie but they never got permission!

Having an iconic career, Jim Carrey has often been associated with comedic roles that were described as ‘wild’. Back in 1994, the actor starred in one of the most famous superhero movies of all time, The Mask.

When Captain Marvel crash lands on Earth right through the ceiling of a Blockbuster Video Store. After recovering herself, Carol Danvers sees the cutout of Arnold Schwarzenegger from his iconic 1994 film True Lies. Getting scared, Brie Larson proceeds to destroy that standee and the story continues. In an interview with Empire, co-director Anna Boden revealed that they really wanted the standee to be Jim Carrey promoting his 1994 movie The Mask.

“We really wanted it to be The Mask, because of the green head. The idea is that she thinks it’s a Skrull. We initially tried to get that but they wouldn’t clear it.”

Turns out the True Lies standee was more dear to the cast and crew of Marvel since the director claimed that Captain Marvel was inspired by a very specific film.

After incinerating the face of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ryan Fleck, the co-director of Captain Marvel, revealed to Empire that the 2019 movie was inspired by a very specific 1990s film. There was a very good reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger’s standee was used in the film and Ryan Fleck is here to answer why.

“James Cameron is of course an action legend. I worked in a video story in 1995 and I remember those True Lies standees – it was more nostalgia than anything.”

Anna Boden stated that all the action movies from the 1990s were a touchstone for Captain Marvel while Ryan Fleck stated that the movie was directly inspired by James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. In the end, Captain Marvel received a rating of 6.8/10 on IMDB and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 2019 action/sci-fi movie is currently available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
