According to the comments by the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the upcoming crossover project may be a multiversal feature. It cannot be denied that multiverse is presently a hot cake in pop culture. Nevertheless, the Transformers and G.I. Joe fans did not expect the makers to connect the franchises by opting for the multiversal way.

Will Transformers x G.I. Joe be a multiverse project?

The concept of a Multiverse was a recurring theme in the superhero comics. The recent MCU projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2 made it more mainstream. Other projects like DCEU’s The Flash and Amazon Prime’s Invincible Season 2 have also given their input to the complex pop culture phenomenon. Looks like Transformers will also join the game.

According to an interview with Sci-Fi & Fantasy GazetteTransformers: Rise of the Beasts producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that the Joes will come to the world of Optimus Prime. The makers have repeatedly stated that they will not affect the continuity of the films. Now the producer’s comment hints at a multiverse story.

“Like every other Transformers movie, the ingredients of the movie is humans and robots get together to stop the villain. The Joes are going to be part of the ingredients now. We’re not going into the Joe world, they’re coming into our world. So, if you think about it that way, I think that’s the closest thing to the plan that we have.”

The ending of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts surprised the audiences when we saw Anthony Ramos‘ protagonist Noah Diaz being invited to join the G.I. Joe team. As the latest Transformers film was a prequel, the surprise ending hinted that the Joes were secretly hiding in the universe.

However, the producer’s comments tease that there may be a multiverse tale planned for their proper introduction.

Since its announcement, the fans are hyped to see how the crossover will be carried out. The timeline plays a crucial role as Rise of the Beasts is set in 1994 and serves as a prequel to the BayVerse films that kicked off in 2007. On the other hand, the G.I. Joe franchise kicked off in 2009 with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Bonaventura has confidently admitted that the Joes will be an active part of the upcoming crossover film- “We now have to figure out the plot we want to do, et cetera, but they will be an active participant, if you would, a few of the characters, in trying to stop the bad guy.” It leaves a massive question mark as to why the Joes had to go on such a long hiding during the BayVerse films.

Making the entry of the Joes into the Transformers universe a multiverse event will make it easy for the makers to respect the continuity. However, it is not the way the fans wanted it. Now if the speculations stand true and the multiverse comes into play, the makers should also take care of the proper introduction of the GI Joe characters within the Transformers universe.

Earlier we have seen how big crossover projects like Justice League fail without proper introduction of characters. So it will be interesting to watch how the makers approach the crossover project which is rumored to be officially announced soon.
