The Oscars 2024 premiered recently and it was an awesome sight to see. This time, however, it wasn’t just an award-distribution ceremony as actors literally used the platform to spread their message and beliefs about the world.
With the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, several actors showed up at the Oscars wearing a red lapel pin. As per Rami Yousef, the pin signified their support for calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the safe return of captives in the war-torn city!
Why Actors Wore A Red Lapel Pin To The Oscars
It was back in October when several artists collectively signed a letter asking President Joe Biden to ceasefire immediately in Gaza and release all the captives held in the city. Calls for peace and humanity were all around and were even further fueled by the involvement of several artists.
Actors and famous people like Mark Ruffalo, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lopez, Rachel McAdams, Andrew Garfield, and, Ben Affleck, are some of the people who have signed this petition. This petition simply asks President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and have the captives released. Well, to make people aware of the scene, actors and celebrities attending the Oscars 2024 were spotted wearing a red lapel pin.
This pin showed a red glossy circle with a hand and a black heart in the center. In a press release, Artists4Ceasefire released a statement (via Al Jazeera) wherein they talked about the red lapel pin.
“The pin symbolises collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Compassion must prevail,”
Notable actors who support the petition have also publicly spoken about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Notable and Poor Things actors Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo were two of the actors who were quite outspoken in their nature.
What Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef Had To Say About The Petition
In an interview with US Media (via Al Jazeera), Ramy Youssef talked about the red lapel pin that he wore at the Oscars. While talking about his message, Youssef was clear in his words and gave a pretty strong message to the people.
“We are asking for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We are asking for justice and peace for the Palestinian people and also you know, a really universal message, which is let’s just stop killing the children,”
In a separate interview on the DGA Carpet, Mark Ruffalo stated that they “are not going to bomb our way to peace.”
“We’re not going to bomb our way to peace, and all we’re saying is, what’s wrong with giving a ceasefire a chance?”
Well, although the conflict continues, Hollywood actors are indeed trying to bring peace to the conflict. Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo recently starred in the 2023 film Poor Things and is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
