The strike in Hollywood is over as the studios and strikers had a mutual agreement following a long strike that has affected several projects on the line. However, a new tension is on the horizon and this time WGA threatened to sue Amazon Studios.
A new report claims that Amazon has declined to resume Silk: Spider Society, the show was in halt due to the Writers’ strike, and as it is over the studio has shown no interest in bringing the series to the production line.
WGA Threatened To Sue Amazon Studios
The update of Silk: Spider Society was exciting for many as Amazon Studios promised to bring a show following fan-favorite character, Cindy Moon. However, the studio has shown no intention to resume the previously announced show to push towards production. WGA is not happy about this and threatened to take legal action. As per an exclusive report from The Ankler, WGA has sent a letter to the Studios. “WGAW has notified Amazon Studios,” WGA told the outlet.
“That their failure to recommence a number of writing rooms after the strike is a violation of the Strike Termination Agreement (STA) between the WGA and AMPTP and Article 7 of the MBA. Studios are obligated to return writers to work “upon termination of the strike,” and writers’ Personal Services Agreements were extended for a period equal to the portion of the contract term that elapsed during the strike. The Guild will bring legal action against Amazon and any other studio that violates the STA to recover compensation, interest on late payments, and benefit contributions due as a result of the delay.”
Following the strike, several projects are still in the dark and there have been no updates to resume these projects including Marvel’s Silk: Spider Society at Amazon. The staff writers previously involved in the project are not getting paid and this has escalated the tension further.
Silk: Spider Society is On Ice
The strike has been pretty hard on everyone in the industry including the writers. But “It is unclear whether the continued suspensions of the rooms is related to the strike or other issues,” one insider told The Ankler adding, “Everything is moving at a glacial pace.” Earlier, in the midst of the WGA strike, several outlets reported that the live-action Silk: Spider Society was in the works. Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) was set to write, produce, and showrun the series. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) were also reportedly attached to the project. Amazon’s Katherine Pope earlier told Deadline that the show was a “huge focus.”
“It’s a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I’m really, really excited to be working with her on Silk. She’s just brilliant and a total pro. This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level. They’ve done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we’re executing at that level,” Pope said.
Amazon’s Silk: Spider Society is based on characters created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. Inspired by the Marvel comics the show follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker. She escapes imprisonment and makes it her mission to find her missing family while evolving into the superhero known as Silk. The cast and release date of the show is still under wraps.
