It was reported by THR that the reason why the talk show host had fired CAA was due to not being invited to an Oscar party hosted by the agency’s CEO, Bryon Lourd. According to the site, Maher was furious that he was snubbed for the event, which was held at the CEO’s home, and fired the agency. The party reported that JJ Abrams, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Margot Robbie, Bob Iger, and Kamala Harris among others were in attendance.

The party reportedly occurred the day before the ceremony on Saturday. The CAA Oscar’s party was reportedly held on Friday night, where many of its top clients such as Robbie, Yorgos Lanthimos, Cillian Murphy, Ryan Gosling, and other Oscar nominees. However, Maher reportedly attended the party hosted by WME a.k.a William Morris Endeavor (via THR).

While it is not known why Bill Maher was shunned by the CAA for the private Oscar party, many speculate that it was because of Maher’s opinion on the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer Barbie. Maher took to social media to talk about his opinion on the highest-grossing film of 2023. He said in an X (formerly Twitter) post,

“OK, “Barbie”: I was hoping it wouldn’t be preachy, man-hating, and a #ZombieLie – alas, it was all three. What is a Zombie Lie? Something that never was true, but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase revenues, e.g.); OR something that USED to be true but no longer is, but certain people pretend it’s still true. “Barbie” is this kind of #ZombieLie.”

Maher went on to say how Barbie fighting the ‘patriarchy’ in the form of the all-men board of Mattel was not realistic as in 2023, the board members of the corporation consisted of seven men and five women (it is six men and five women, via Mattel). He also said how the ‘patriarchy’ that the film mentioned did not exist and that the argument that he would not know about patriarchy because he was a man was ‘old and silly’.

Netizens took to social media to talk about how his firing the CAA for a snubbed party invitation was too much. They also mentioned how his inclusion in a party that honored much of the Barbie cast would have been awkward.
