Captain America: Civil War is considered to be one of the best films the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had to offer. Keeping the storyline aside, such intense love for the film came because fans got to see their favorite Marvel superheroes together on the screen. The airport fight scene is still one of the fandom’s favorites! However, Chris Hemsworth was clearly missing from the party.

When Chris Hemsworth realized Captain America: Civil War was a thing and that many of his “friends from work” were going to be in it, he was quite worried about his future in the MCU. He came to the conclusion that Thor was being kicked out of the superhero universe and decided to confront the higher-ups about the fiasco.

While the Avengers were on a press tour for Age of Ultron, Chris Hemsworth picked up on the conversations happening amongst his co-stars. Everyone was talking about Civil War which left Hemsworth absolutely confused. When he asked if this was a side project they were working on, he was quite shocked to learn that it was the new Captain America movie and they were all in it. All but Hemsworth.

In the book titled, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth recalled (via CBR),

“I remember being on the Age of Ultron press tour, and everyone was talking about Civil War I was like, ‘What’s Civil War?’ I asked, ‘Are you doing a side-project or something?’ They’re like, ‘Oh no, Captain America, y’know? The next one is Civil War.’ I’m like, ‘Wait… Iron Man’s in that?’ And it’s like, ‘Yeah, but there’s not just Iron Man. There’s Vision. There’s Spider-Man'”

Hemsworth then did what anyone in his place would’ve – confront Marvel bosses.

“Wait — what the hell am I doing.? [Marvel] said, ‘You’re doing your own thing.'”

Hemsworth’s fears were absolutely valid given the fact that Thor and Thor: The Dark World were considered to be some of the MCU’s least-liked movies. He thought his superhero days were over but luckily, Taika Waititi had the biggest redemption waiting for him in the form of Thor: Ragnarok, a film close to the hearts of many MCU fans. He then went ahead to star in Thor: Love and Thunder and become the only Avenger with four solo films to his name.

The question is, why wasn’t Thor in Civil War after all? Well, as it turns out, the God of Thunder was enjoying a well-deserved vacation before he could fight his sister in Thor: Ragnarok.

Waititi directed a series of Team Thor shorts that playfully explained the Avenger’s absence from Civil War. In the shorts, you can see Thor taking a break in Australia, along with his friend Darryl and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner who was also M.I.A. in Captain America’s solo film.

Hemsworth says,

“They had this great idea to just have Thor on a holiday, taking some time out here in Australia, just wanting to do some regular things and hang out with some regular folk.”

The first short in the series was also called While You Were Fighting: A Thor Mockumentary and can be streamed on Disney+.
