When Maggie Smith Teased Sir Ian McKellen for Wearing His Lucky Stone to the Oscars

While Sir Ian McKellen undeniably ranks among the finest actors of our time, he, like many, harbors a touch of superstition. Just as sports fans have their rituals to ensure victory for their favorite teams, McKellen, having recently received a pounamu pendant from New Zealand, wore it to the Oscars in hopes of improving his chances of winning. However, fate had other plans for him at the event.

During a visit to The Graham Norton Show, the actor from The Lord of the Rings narrated a humorous story about how his close friend Maggie Smith managed to further deflate his already deflated spirits during the Oscars.

He narrated that while entering the venue on the red carpet, the actor was greeted by Smith. When she noticed something peculiar around his neck, it prompted her to ask, “What’s that for?” After McKellen explained its purpose, they parted ways to the seating area. However, the real twist came afterward, after all the winners were announced. He narrated,

“You know, it lasts for three-and-a-half, four hours and at the end of course everyone else wins the Oscar except for you. I’m a bit rejected and was looking forward to a drink and I bumped into Maggie Smith and she said, ‘It didn’t work, did it?!’”
