The second season of Invincible is hurtling towards its conclusion with Mark Grayson still in conflict with the Viltrumite Empire. The series has been faithful to the comics for the most part. However, the title cards for the second season have been slowly but surely hinting at a major change to one of the most important aspects of Mark’s superhero career.
In the comics, this change does not have a narrative reason, leading to major criticism. However, the animated series has an opportunity to fix this error and provide a meaningful explanation for one of the biggest changes Mark undergoes as a superhero. Here is what the title cards in Invincible Season 2 are teasing and how they can improve one mistake from the source material.
Invincible Season 2 Title Cards Are Teasing a Major Comic Book Change For Mark
Invincible has one of the most inventive title cards, with the show sharing its name with the protagonist’s superhero name. Moreover, the title cards often connect and evolve with the storyline playing out in a particular episode. In the second season, the Steven Yeun-led series has primarily featured a red title card, with crackles of blue.
The red remains constant throughout the episodes but the blue crackling becomes more prominent as the season progresses. While the red signifies Mark’s brutal and bloody beatdown at the hands of his father in the first season finale, the blue signifies a major change in Mark’s superhero career.
In Robert Kirkman‘s comics, Mark swaps his yellow and black suit for a blue and black one in Invincible #51. The second season has already adapted events until the comic’s issue #44. As a result, the season 2 title cards hint at the impending costume change for Invincible. Given the progression of the story and the title cards, the costume change could materialize in the second season finale.
How Invincible Season 2 Can Provide a Meaning to Mark’s Costume Change
While Mark’s blue and black costume is one of the coolest superhero outfits from the comics, it lacks any sort of narrative explanation or logical reasoning. In issue #51, Arthur “Art” Rosenbaum, Mark’s suit tailor, gives him a new costume simply because he is bored of the old one and does not want it to clash with the colors of Mark’s half-brother, Oliver’s costume.
Given the lack of reasoning behind the costume change, the move has often faced criticism. However, the animated series has a chance to fix this issue by providing a deeper explanation behind Mark’s costume change, as hinted by the title cards. The series could see Mark face a major defeat in the season 2 finale, forcing him to start from scratch and rebuild his superhero persona.
As a result, Mark could opt for a costume change to signify a fresh start. At the same time, the change of costume can also be explained by Mark separating himself from the shadow of his father Omni-Man. Meanwhile, the new suit could also have some tactical advantage, making the change necessary. Irrespective of the reason, providing an explanation for Mark’s costume change would improve the source material.
