Chris Evans’ rise to fame may have started early on in his career with Not Another Teen Movie but what helped boost it was undeniably his contributions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Becoming the embodiment of two eras mixing, there was a difficult task on Evans’ head that included balancing the old lifestyle with the new.

Steve Roger constantly struggled with being a man out of time but also led the Avengers in the best manner possible. This made him one of the most iconic superheroes in any series possible. Much like any other role, there were various actors who wanted to try out for the character, but only Evans prevailed. However, it was not as if all of them stepped away from the MCU.

The Mix and Match of Actors Who Wanted to Be Chris Evans’ Captain America

In a perfect world, Chris Evans stood as the face of Captain America before Anthony Mackie was passed the torch. The way Evans brought the character of Steve Rogers to life was one of the most epic storytelling attributes of the MCU. Revealed in the novel, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, it came to be known that Evans was not alone in trying out for the role.

“When I was casting Captain America, I did not understand where this was going to go- I really had no idea.”

Sarah Haley Finn, the casting director of the franchise revealed that finding an actor who fit such an aesthetic became an even more difficult job than they had first anticipated. There were seven actors in total who were able to audition for the role outside of Chris Evans. This included Ryan Philippe, Chace Crawford, Jensen Ackles, Garrett Hedlund, Wyatt Russell, John Krasinski, and Sebastian Stan. Despite their hard tries, only three of them were able to make it into the MCU in later years.

3. John Krasinski

Although he tried out for the role of Steve Rogers while on a break from his iconic show, The Office, the actor did not really match well with Captain America. This later got him away from the role. However, he did not have to wait long considering that his entry into the MCU was imminent anyway. The actor later appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the Fantastic 4’s Mister Fantastic.

Not only was he in demand for the role by the fans, but they were overtly excited upon seeing him. Even though he turned into ribbons at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. Krasinski even made it so far as to have some screen tests being dressed up as the character. However, seeing Chris Hemsworth and just how built and buff he was made him realize that he may not be cut out for the role.

2. Wyatt Russell

Wyatt Russell may not have become Captain America, but he did pick up the shield. Taking in the persona of John Walker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, the actor initially tried out for the role of Steve Rogers. Ironically he became an exact parallel of what Steve Rogers and the Shield stood for.

He may not be the star-spangled man but he is the U.S. Agent. Not only that, but Sarah Halley Finn also happened to be the first person ever to give Russell a professional interview.

1. Sebastian Stan

Sarah Halley Finn revealed in MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios that Sebastian Stan was also a viable candidate for the role of Steve Rogers. They continued with the audition process with the actor for some time but noticed how he had a darker aspect to him.

“But we saw something a bit darker, a bit edgier. And as we continued to go through the process, it seemed like the best role might be Bucky.”

Keeping in mind such a quality, they began exploring potential roles for Stan, wondering which would suit him the best. In the end, Bucky Barnes became the ideal character for him, since the Winter Soldier does stand out as a darker, more tainted version of Captain America.
