According to Marvel Comics Barney is Clint’s older brother who initially taught Hawkeye combat skills and helped him to improve his aim.
The two brothers were orphaned at a young age after their parents Harold and Edith Barton died in a car crash. Placed in numerous foster homes, Clint and Barney eventually ran away and came across one of the star performers, Jacques DuQuesne also known as the Swordsman, after they took up odd jobs at the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonder as roustabouts.
While Clint became devoted to the Swordsman and his fellow performer Trickshot, who taught him archery, Barney focused on his education after being overlooked by his idol, Swordsman.
