Taylor Swift is the reigning queen of pop music as she wins Album of the Year for ‘Midnights’. This is a record-breaking feat as she takes home the most number of wins for album of the year at four, including ‘Fearless,’ ‘1989’ and ‘Folklore’.
Swift also won her second Grammy that night with Best Pop Vocal Album. This is the 14th Grammy win of her entire career since 2008. The award was presented by Celine Dion.
Taylor Swift Breaks Record Again And Announces New Album
During her acceptance speech, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift shared to the audience that while she’s happy to receive the Grammy awards, nothing makes her heart flutter than actually working on a song or preparing a new surprise for her fans (via AP News):
“I would love to tell you this is the best moment of my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song, or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love, or when I’m shortlisting a music video, or when I’m working with my dancers. For me, the award is the work.”
As she continued with her speech, Swift revealed she has been keeping a secret for two years:
“My brand-new album comes out April 19. It’s called the Tortured Poets Department. I’m going to go and post the cover right now backstage.”
The caption of her post reads: “All’s fair in love and poetry…” The singer’s revelation of her upcoming album indeed evoked extreme excitement from the audience.
Jay-Z Defends Wife Beyoncé On Her Album Of The Year Losses
In line with Taylor Swift becoming the first artist to win the most number of albums of the year, it seems that rapper Jay-Z just threw shade at the Grammys in his speech. As he accepts the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, he expressed his dissatisfaction at the idea that his wife, Beyoncé, never took home album of the year (via AP News):
“Obviously, it’s subjective because, you know, it’s music, and it’s opinion-based. But you know, some things, you know, I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year.”
Jay-Z continued his message by pointing out that many of his fellow artists might feel bad that they have been done dirty by the Grammys, and he ended it with a laugh while claiming he was telling the truth.
“So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won album of the year. It doesn’t work. Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category. All right. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, that was it, no. When I get nervous, I tell the truth.”
It’s truly a wonder why after all those hit albums and songs over the past years, Beyoncé only bagged nominations for album of the year and not even one win.
