Dakota Johnson’s recent release Madame Web turned out to be a disaster of epic proportions. The film failed to connect with audiences due to its horrendous writing and shoddy narration. The film is already a box office bomb and is considered one of the worst superhero films ever made. Some of the cast of the film has addressed the failure of the film.
While Sydney Sweeny made fun of her role and the eventual disaster of Madame Web on SNL, the lead of the film, Johnson addressed the film’s failure properly. The actress has opened up about how she was aware that things would go down this way and whether she would return to the superhero genre again.
Dakota Johnson Claims She Will ‘Probably’ Never Do a Big Studio Film Again
Dakota Johnson‘s first foray into the superhero genre did not fare well as Madame Web turned out to be a disaster. The film was criticized from every corner for its inability to tell a coherent story and its over-reliant references to Spider-Man despite trying to tell an original story. Johnson has now addressed the film’s failure in a new interview with Bustle.
In the interview, Johnson stated that she is not surprised by the way the film has turned out and criticized big studio films that are made by a ‘committee’. She points out that audiences are smart and will ‘sniff out’ any gimmicks employed to cover a bad film.
The actress declared that she does not belong to big-budget filmmaking or superhero films and might probably never do these types of films again. She said,
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.”
Fans supported Johnson’s statements on X where they criticized Sony for misleading her into a project that had drastically changed from the time she signed on to do it. They agree with the actress’ claims and believe she deserves better after what happened with Madame Web. Here are some of the reactions on X,
Totally underestandable. Who knows how they lied to her

It’s unfortunate that Johnson’s first big studio film turned out to be a big disaster and the actress might never return to this type of filmmaking again. She is already back to doing indie dramas and she finds more freedom and creativity doing those. Johnson is at her best in character-driven low-budget drams rather than big studio tentpole films.
Dakota Johnson’s Upcoming Film Was Her Salvation After Madame Web
After Madame Web, Johnson is returning to her indie roots and starring in the film Daddio which she also produced. The film which also has Sean Penn in the lead, follows a cab diver and his customer bonding about various aspects of life during her ride to Manhattan. Johnson revealed to Bustle that she felt more like herself shooting that film than doing Madame Web.
She stated that the film was like her salvation after shooting in a big green-screen environment for Madame Web. She was very hands-on as a producer on the film and praised Penn for his work on the film which they shot like a play. She said,
“Well, I went directly from Madame Web to Daddio, and that was my salvation. [Laughs.] We shot that in 16 days, and my company made it, so that means that I was very hands-on. It was amazing. Sean [Penn] was amazing. It was so contained. It was really like a play. We would shoot 20 pages a day.”
Daddio is set for a theatrical release sometime in 2024. Johnson is also starring in Past Lives‘ director Celine Song’s next film Materialists opposite Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Fans can currently watch Johnson in Madame Web in theatres.
