It might come as a disappointment to Kevin Hart fans, but the actor/comedian has recently refused to host Oscar events. After his dreams of hosting the Academy Awards went into vain in 2019, Hart declared that in the future he won’t be hosting Hollywood’s biggest night as an emcee.
Shutting down the possibility of him hosting the Oscars during his appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Kevin Hart further explained his refusal during his recent interview with Sky News. Sharing his grim outlook on how awards shows treat comedians, Hart offered his honest opinion.
Kevin Hart Opted Out as an Oscar Host After 2019
Back in 2019, renowned actor/comedian Kevin Hart was announced as the 91st Oscar ceremony’s emcee. With great dreams of hosting Hollywood’s biggest night in his heart, the actor claimed to be excited about the opportunity. But unfortunately, within a few days of the announcement, Hart had to step down from the gig, due to controversies.
Apparently, some of his old homophobic jokes and tweets resurfaced online, which forced Kevin Hart to not only apologize but also let go of his dream of hosting the Oscars. Ever since then, Hart has never expressed his desire to host the Academy Awards, ever again. But now that the 2024 Oscars are approaching close, the actor was asked about the possibility of hosting the event.
Appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Kevin Hart was asked if there’s a possibility of him hosting the Oscars. Although Jimmy Kimmel has been shortlisted to host the big night of 2024, Hart was casually asked about his future with the Academy Awards events. “Kill the idea of it, it’s not going to happen” Hart openly refused.
Kevin Hart Explained the Reason Behind His Refusal
Sharing his unfiltered remarks with Andy Cohen during his interview on Bravo TV, Kevin Hart openly stated that hosting the Oscars is off the table. Although Cohen claimed that he was “still ready” for the actor to host the 2024 Oscars, the actor refused to take up the gig, which was followed by applause from the in-studio audience.
“There’s just no return of good. What is it doing for me? There’s no upside at this point. That’s the only reason why… I think at a point of time in my career, it was something that acted as a bump and want, just to get a notch in my belt of something else that I was able to obtain and view. But I’m far beyond and past that. But I don’t need that at this point.” Hart shared.
Further, explaining his decision, Kevin Hart reiterated the Oscars were off the table, during an interview with Sky News. Discussing his opinion on how awards shows treat comedians, Hart dissed the awards show environment they create.
“Whatever little hope you had, I want to destroy it right now. Those gigs aren’t good gigs for comics. It’s no shot to the Oscars, no shot to the Globes, or anything else. Those just aren’t comedy-friendly environments anymore. I think they got it right one year where it was like just a bunch of personalities acting as the hosts and that’s a nice thing… Shout out to those that have cracked the code and done it right early on.”
Praising the previous hosts of the Oscars for cracking the code and handling the situation well, Kevin Hart claimed that the Oscars are a cold environment for a comic. Thus, realizing the gravity of the situation, Hart walked out on the opportunity to ever host any award shows.
