Blumhouse’s new film Five Nights at Freddy’s was recently released simultaneously in theatres and on Peacock. The film received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics. As The Direct puts it, the new film has become the worst-rated video game film in almost 7 years. However, this does not seem to have deterred the audience’s interest in the film.

Currently, the film has an outstanding 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This love and support for the film seems to have also translated into its box office. As reported by Deadline, the film is currently eying a stunning $130 million global opening. This is such a rare achievement, one which only something like the Marvel and DC films were able to do previously.

This means that this comparatively smaller film managed to beat the opening weekend collection of Shazam! Fury of the Gods ($65 million via Variety) by a huge margin and was incredibly close to opening collections of other recent DC offerings including Black Adam and Flash ($140 million and $139 million respectively via Collider).

It even managed to beat Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s $120 million global opening (via Deadline). It is indeed a cause of celebration for the studio owing to this huge success.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum took a big swing when he decided to take up the responsibility of doing a film adaptation of the popular game Five Nights at Freddy’s. He talked to Gamesradar+ about the lengths he went to to get the adaptation right. He said,

“Five Nights at Freddy’s is a very Blumhouse game,” he explains. “I mean, the theme and the story and the mythology definitely shares a lot of DNA with a lot of the movies and television shows that we’ve done. So creatively, it was a great fit. But also there are very few games with the kind of reach that Five Nights at Freddy’s has that haven’t been adapted.

I was excited about the challenge of trying to do something. People had tried with Five Nights and not figured it out but I was excited [because] I always like a challenge. So I thought that would be fun to try and see if I could pull it off. It took longer than I thought, but we did it.”

Blum also revealed that the original creator of the game Scott Cawthon is incredibly pleased with the adaptation. He told Gamesradar+,

“Scott’s very happy with the movie. Scott was intimately involved in every stage of the movie. There were no surprises when he saw the movie and I think he’s very happy with it. He’s very proud of it. And I think that’s a real tribute to Emma [Tammi, director] who really was able to turn his game into a terrific movie that Scott gave his stamp of approval to, which was a tricky, very tricky job.”

The film has been destroying all sorts of expectations and is set to become a huge moneymaker for the studio. It seems Blumhouse’s unique strategy is working out very well for them and people are flocking to the theaters to experience their projects.
