Xbox gamers have been making the maximum use of Game Pass to pay a monthly subscription fee and play not just exclusives but also partner titles on Day One. An Ultimate Game Pass subscription even allows subscribers to game on multiple devices besides an Xbox console.

While PlayStation also has a similar subscription for gamers, it has not garnered as much popularity as its rival, both in terms of new titles offered and also in terms of subscription rates, comparatively. So when an opportunity presented itself to bring up the competitiveness between the two subscriptions, one of the official Xbox accounts on X did not miss the chance to throw shade on its rival.

Xbox Takes a Jab at PlayStation Over Yakuza Deals

PlayStation posted deals on the Yakuza titles, and Xbox shot back stating the titles are on Game Pass.

The Yakuza franchise started as a PlayStation (PS) and Wii exclusive with the first two titles. It wasn’t until Yakuza 3 was released back in 2009 that the game also came to Windows and Xbox consoles. Some spin-offs were still made for PS Portable and PS 3.

When PS added as many as eight titles to PS Plus membership, it was split between PS Plus, PS Plus Extra, and Premium memberships. On the other hand, Xbox Game Pass (XGP) added the entire Yakuza franchise to its library which subscribers of all XGP memberships were able to access.

Getting access to tons of titles right from the first-tier XGP subscription was always the biggest factor that gave it an edge over PS Plus’ multi-tier subscriptions. Only XGP Core has a limited library of 30 titles that is regularly updated for those who wish to test the subscription before diving all in to subscribe to the main subscription tiers.

Earlier this week, PS UK posted on X about an ongoing sale for some of the Yakuza titles, ranging between $5 to $11, with sales for three of the titles ending today. Xbox UK took note of the post and posted their take on the Yakuza titles which remain on XGP and playable by subscribers. Fans of both sides also noted the two posts and were quick to respond to both Xbox and PS accounts with each other’s posts.

At the time of writing, there are no Yakuza titles on the PS Plus library which means gamers will need to buy the titles if they wish to play them on the console while sales last to get the best offer. While XGP subscribers can pay for any of the three memberships and start playing the titles right away, there is the ever-impending doubt of titles leaving the library as well.

Fans Divided Over Playing Games on Subscription and Owning Games

Several games get added to PS Plus every month but exclusives don't always get added on release day.

Single-player games usually get snatched when deals and sales are going on but gamers aren’t as patient to always wait for deals for fan-favorite titles like the Yakuza titles. While XGP gives an entire library to choose from, some gamers still prefer to own the titles to play them anytime they wish to, should they not be sure of finishing the titles soon.

In-house Xbox exclusives including first-partner studios almost always get added to the XGP library on the day of launch giving subscribers the advantage of getting their hands on them immediately. On the other hand, not all exclusives make it to the PS Plus library on release day, including new games from partner studios Naughty Dog, Insomniac, or Guerrilla.

While PlayStation consoles themselves have always edged way past its rival, and have also been preferred by gamers the most, Xbox has the edge when it comes to games. PS exclusives like the God of War franchise, Uncharted titles, and the Spider-Man franchise recently have also been getting ported to PC with upgraded visuals and framerates.

The Yakuza titles are also on PC and Xbox consoles so unless gamers only have access to a PS console, purchasing the titles makes sense only on such occasions when there are heavy deals. The next title in the franchise, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, is coming out later this month and is not expected on either of the two subscriptions.
