Blue Beetle may have been the leader of one of the greatest and most heroic legacies in the history of the DC Universe, but the fan-favorite character wasn’t done much justice when it comes to his story’s live-action adaptation film from 2023.

While the story faced mixed reviews from general audiences and fans, its box office run was the most disappointing and a thoroughly forgettable one.

But it seems like the DCU is here to make fans forget all about that. This comes after the latest reports about Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios’ next project, which is an animated series on this very character, build up on the original movie.

Since this will continue to tell the story of the iconic superhero, fans are once again demanding the involvement of Xolo Maridueña in it.

DCU Reportedly Working on an Animated Blue Beetle Series

According to the latest reports from Deadline, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. Animation doesn’t want to let go of the fan-favorite character that easily after the disaster that was 2023’s Blue Beetle, and is thus taking a different approach to continue telling his stories.

This notably includes them developing an animated series on the character instead, which is currently in the works. However, this would reportedly “divert from telling the same story” that was seen in the Xolo Maridueña-led film and would instead “create its own story,” as per Deadline.

That said, this project’s showrunner and director is set to be Miguel Puga, who has reportedly been involved and working on this series since early this year. Working alongside him will be Cristian Martinez, who will prominently be developing the series’ storyline as its writer.

Moreover, the director and screenwriter of the 2023 movie Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, respectively, will also serve as its executive producers alongside John Rickard. Adding to this crew is Galen Vaisman, the EP of the live-action film, who will oversee this animated series.

The live-action movie wasn’t quite up to the mark when it comes to its theatrical expectations and was left with a box office run that barely surpassed its production budget (it grossed $128 million on a $120 million budget, as per The Numbers).

But it seems like this upcoming animated series could wipe out that sour aftertaste that the Susan Sarandon-starrer’s box office left behind and bring back something new and all the more exciting to the table that performs as equally splendidly among viewers as it does commercially.

All of this being said, fans seem to have once again started hoping that things could seriously turn out for the better for their beloved superhero with an animated series.
