You hear the saying ‘opposites attract’ a lot when it comes to relationships. However, what if keeping your bedrooms apart is the key to a happy marriage? The Mask alum, Cameron Diaz, recently caused a stir when she confessed that she and her spouse, Benji Madden, sleep in separate rooms, defying social norms regarding cohabitation and the shared bed.
Well, speaking about her unconventional lifestyle, Diaz said on the Lipstick on the Rim podcast that she would love to have her own home, adding, “you have yours”.
Not only do the “separate bedrooms” arrangements of the Bad Teacher star raise interesting questions about intimacy and personal space, but they may surprise a lot of people. Since their January 2015 wedding, Diaz and Madden have been together. In 2019, they welcomed their daughter, Raddix Madden, into their family.

Cameron Diaz: Married Couples Should ‘Normalize Separate Bedrooms’
Cameron Diaz, 51, had a different idea of what a perfect marriage would entail before she tied the knot with Benji Madden, a member of the Good Charlotte band, in 2015. In an interview with Molly Sims and Emese Gormley for the podcast Lipstick on the Rim, which aired on December 19, 2023, the actress discussed why she used to think that the “separate bedrooms” arrangement was the best possible living deal.
After someone on the show acknowledged that her husband snores, Diaz struck up a conversation that began by saying,
“We should normalize separate bedrooms.”
She then went on to describe the setup in detail:
“To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.”
One of the hosts responded to her comment by stating that having two bedrooms might be a divisive statement. The Counselor actress responded, saying:
“I’ve already said it. By the way, I don’t feel that way now because my husband is so wonderful. I said that before I got married.”
On January 5, 2015, Diaz tied the knot in a Jewish ceremony at her Beverly Hills, California, home with musician Benji Madden.
When Benji Madden Met the Bad Teacher Star
According to ELLE in May 2014, Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden were acquainted as celebrities and had previously been in similar social circles. However, they formally “met” at a party that Diaz threw at her house, where he went with Joel Madden and Nicole Richie.
A few months later, in October, Diaz was spotted sporting an engagement ring, which sparked rumors of an impending nuptial. Just before Christmas of that year, the couple finally announced their engagement. A source told Us Weekly:
“Everyone thinks it is wild but are so happy for them. Benji always tends to fall in love easily, but this time it’s for real, and he landed a great girl. They obviously both make each other incredibly happy, and there’s nothing better than that.”
Less than ten months after they first met, on January 5, 2015, the couple exchanged vows. Drew Barrymore, Judd Apatow, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lionel Richie, and Reese Witherspoon were among the guests at the Beverly Hills wedding. The pair stated this at the time in a statement (via E! Online):
“We couldn’t be happier to begin our new journey together surrounded by our closest family and friends.
The Body Book: Feed, Move, Understand and Love Your Amazing Body co-author stated the following to Harper’s Bazaar later.
“[Marriage] was the biggest thing I’ve done in my 40s, and it opened me up in different ways. It’s pretty awesome. I didn’t think it was something I’d do, and I don’t know if I’d have done it if I hadn’t met my husband. It was a surprise.”
In December 2019, the couple welcomed their daughter via surrogacy.
On the work front, we will next see Diaz in Netflix’s Back in Action, an upcoming action comedy directed by Seth Gordon. The film also stars Jamie Foxx, Kyle Chandler, and Glenn Close.
