Glen Powell has once again denied the rumors of him being involved with his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney. However, he revealed that both of them leaned on their chemistry off the screen to promote the film. The affair speculations arose after intimate set photos of the couple were shared online and they both flirted a little bit during the promotions of the film.
Sweeney, who also co-produced the film, was involved in the marketing of the film right from the beginning. Their efforts really paid off as the film went from a modest $6 million domestic debut to becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated romantic comedies in a long time.

The pretense went beyond the screen for both Powell and Sweeney as they managed to make people feel they had something going on between them.
Speaking to the New York Times, the Top Gun: Maverick star revealed that it was Sweeney’s smart idea to lean into their chemistry off the screen. It worked fantastically as people’s interest in their off-screen chemistry generated interest in the movie. Powell added that they both had plenty of fun and effortless chemistry, two factors that sold their rom-com film. He shared with The New York Times:
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”
The Euphoria star proved that she’s a marketing genius with the film that she co-produced. Sweeney was present on every marketing call and group chat of the film. She revealed to The New York Times that she had several ideas that often kept the marketing and distribution team at Sony awake at night. She told the NY Times:
“I was on every call. I was in text group chats. I was probably keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because I couldn’t stop with ideas.”
According to Box Office Mojo, the film went on to collect $88.3 million at the domestic box office and a total of $219 million worldwide. Variety reported that the film was the first rom-com in over five years to cross $200 million, after 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians. It was also the first R-rated film since 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby to achieve the feat.
How Did Anyone But You‘s Promotions Spark An Affair Rumor Between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney?
Months before the film hit the theater, steamy photos of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney from the sets of Anyone But You were widely shared on the internet (via Page Six). The photos were from a scene in a boat where both actors were seen donning their bathing suits. The film’s couple were having fun in these photos, sparking a rumor of their romantic chemistry for the first time.
While appearing at the CinemaCon 2023, both actors were seen flirting in front of the cameras (via Vulture). Powell made the comment, “We love seeing ourselves on the big screen,” to which The Voyeurs actress responded, “Oh please, Top Gun.” Powell further engaged in the flirty banter, sharing, “I love it when she calls me that,” to which Sweeney says, “I thought he was Miles Teller until the fourth day of shooting.”
The flirty banter became a constant thing throughout the promotions. The widely-shared ASMR pick-up lines clip on TikTok also fueled the rumors. Sydney Sweeney addressed the rumored romance during her SNL monologue, where she shared, “[The rumor] is obviously not true. The Madame Web actress is engaged to Jonathan Davino, who also co-produced the film through Sweeney’s production company, Fifty-Fifty Films.
