Sacha Baron Cohen’s humor is universally adored, even by his ex-wife, Isla Fisher. They were married for 14 years and together for more than two decades before parting ways this April. Despite their divorce, there’s no animosity between them. They were once considered one of Hollywood’s strongest couples, with Cohen’s humor being a key factor in their enduring relationship.

How Sacha Baron Cohen and His Now Ex-Wife Isla Fisher Made Their Marriage Last So Long?

Time and again, the public has witnessed big celebrity power couples break up due to the relentless hounding of the paparazzi, with the most notable example being Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Being an A-lister in Hollywood comes with its own parts and parcel, not all of which are positive. While professional success is abundant, private lives often suffer.

Therefore, when Sacha Baron Cohen was asked how he maintained his long-lasting relationship with his now ex-wife Isla Fisher in the public light after being together for more than two decades, he recalled one incident and credited their “B-list” celebrity status jokingly. In a conversation with The New York Times, the Borat actor revealed,

“I remember once in Hollywood, I was trying to avoid being photographed by paparazzi. I think I put something in front of my face when exiting a restaurant, and this photographer shouted, ‘You’re only a B-lister!’ And I said to Isla, ‘Oh, my God, we’re B-listers! We made it! We’re B-listers,—it seems bizarre that we’re still married in Hollywood after so many years.”

Indeed, it’s quite unusual. Now that they’re divorced, even a marriage lasting more than a decade in Hollywood is a notable achievement in its own right.

The actor was instantly smitten by Fisher when he first met her in 2000 at a party in Australia,

“She was hilarious – We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over taking the mick out of the other people in the party. I knew instantly. I don’t know if she did.”

Their shared sense of humor not only brought them together but also kept them close. Isla Fisher also once shared with The Australian Women’s Weekly (via Hola!),

“Having a shared ability to find humor in the sharpness of life is always going to bring connection, I get nervous talking about it because I feel like, by not having my relationship in the public domain and not having spoken about how we met or really talked about our marriage publicly, it’s remained something private and valuable to me.”

Keeping their private life under wraps also helped them maintain their sanity and continue their relationship.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher Announce Their Divorce in a Unique Way

It is truly evident when it is said that the two share the same sense of humor here. After almost 23 years together, they finally decided to announce their divorce earlier this month. They did not choose a tacky white background and corporate font to convey the message on Instagram. They did it in style.

The couple shared a picture of both of them dressed in tennis clothes and wrote on their respective Instagram stories(via Today). They wrote,

“After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage,”

They further added,

“We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change, We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy.”

While undoubtedly a heart-wrenching development, it’s truly refreshing to see someone approach such weighty matters with a lighthearted and fun touch.
