In the recent chapters of Dragon Ball Super, Gohan is receiving a lot of attention as the next successor of Goku. In fact, in chapter 103 of the manga, Goku himself admitted that he would no longer have to worry about the Earth’s future in his absence.

However, other than ‘Earth’s savior’, there’s one other position that needs fulfilling, and Gohan has been a candidate for a long time. Yet the latest chapter completely disregarded Gohan’s capability as the next God of Destruction.

In chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super, Goku and Co. are having a peaceful time. (As peaceful as Saiyans can get by dueling) Goku tried to test Gohan but was beaten back. Gohan manages to surprise Goku, Vegeta, Whis, and even Beerus with his power.

Beerus showed interest in Gohan’s battle. He asked Whis if Gohan was in Super Saiyan form. Whis answered that he had not reached Super Saiyan in the battle and was not using a divine technique. Yet, Gohan managed to land a hit on Goku. Beerus is impressed by this but refuses to show it.

However, during Gohan’s battle with Broly, Beerus can’t help but marvel at his powers:

Goku’s kid has a better handle (compared to Broly) on the power he is toting.

Whis then casually suggests that he could be a suitable candidate for the next God of Destruction. However, Beerus shuts down the suggestion at once:

No way, not a chance. Destruction isn’t in the cards for someone that straitlaced.

With this one sentence, Beerus shut down Gohan’s possibility of being the next God of Destruction. As far as the manga goes, the most viable option for the position is still Vegeta.

Why Gohan Isn’t Suitable to be the God of Destruction

Gohan isn’t someone who enjoys battling just for the sake of it. He was always more interested in other walks of life. He becomes strong enough to protect the ones he loves, but unlike Goku, he doesn’t live to fight stronger opponents.

Just as Beerus described, Gohan is straight-laced. The primary requirement to be a God of Destruction is to enjoy destruction. Their duty is to destroy whole planets, races, and anything that threatens the balance of the universe.

Each universe has its own Destroyer, who gets replaced once they are close to death. The candidates are selected on the basis of power. Both Goku and Vegeta were offered the position, but they declined simply due to their quest for power.

By now, you already know that Gohan’s personality is the complete opposite of Goku and Vegeta. Thus, he might not be able to function properly due to his kindness. Afterall, it’s a tough decision to destroy an entire planet or race.
