The upcoming DLC for Remnant 2 has gamers pumped for fresh content. The third-person shooter RPG suffered a turbulent launch back in July 2023, owing to a wonky in-game economy, performance issues, lacking loadouts, and more.

However, thanks to periodic updates and QoL improvements, the game is in a much better place these days, and a recent PC Gamer interview with developer Gunfire Games revealed a big reason behind its comeback: working side-by-side with the community.

It All Started With An Overpowered Spear Build In Remnant 2

Unlike some action-RPGs where your character is stuck playing a certain way, Remnant 2 lets you mix and match tons of stuff to make your own bespoke build. This freedom comes from putting different items together in surprising ways, even if the developers didn’t exactly plan for it.

Instead of freaking out about these unexpected tricks, Gunfire Games sees them as a good thing. Principal designer Ben Cureton referred to a specific example:

Somebody made a build—it used the Ring of Spears, which is a weapon mod that puts a ring of spears around you, but you can throw the spears individually. I was like: Hm, I didn’t think about that, but we did script it and say it was allowed.

While most game studios would look at this as “hacks” or exploits that need to be patched out, Gunfire instead decided to double down on the ingenuity of the player base.

The off-the-wall teamwork sparked a fresh idea for Gunfire. “What if we made some more on-skill activation trinkets, so we’ll add some more, and all of a sudden that build is even more enhanced.” Cureton pondered, adding:

The community is massive in terms of helping us [enable more] builds.

This ideology shows a big strength of Remnant 2‘s development – being open to learning from players and changing the game based on their ideas. Instead of seeing these gray-area builds as cheats, Gunfire Games sees them as ways to make the game even more fun.

By adding in strategies players come up with themselves, they give players more power to fine-tune their characters and make them unique.

This synergy with player creativity ensures that Remnant 2 stays fresh and exciting, where trying out new things and finding hidden tricks isn’t just allowed, it’s highly encouraged. The community gets to play a big role in shaping the future of the game by sharing their thoughts, which Gunfire then implements into awesome gameplay improvements.
