In her 2020 interview with The New Yorker, singer Fiona Apple revealed that Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino effectively made her quit cocaine.
Recalling that “one excruciating night” she spent at Tarantino’s house with her then-boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson, she claimed that listening to their conversations was a nightmare for her:
“Every addict should just get locked in a private movie theatre with Q.T. and P.T.A. on coke, and they’ll never want to do it again.”
The singer joked that she couldn’t listen to the two legendary directors “brag” to each other, so she just decided to quit the drug.

Paul Thomas Anderson and Fiona Apple started dating in 1997. Apple revealed that the two became the “it” couple but the story was different behind the scenes. Anderson had anger issues and often said “cruel things” to her in public. Their relationship came to an end in 2000 and Anderson went on to date actress Maya Rudolph in 2001.
