Star Wars Outlaws will not be like any previous game that is set in a galaxy far, far away and it doesn’t share the DNA of EA and Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi games. Players will take on the role of Kay Vess and explore the criminal underworld during the Galactic Civil War.

The game has the advantage and disadvantage of a looming shadow from the films, players will have certain expectations and the team behind it is leaning towards one specific film for reference.

In a recent interview, Julian Gerighty serves as the creative director for Ubisoft’s installment to the franchise and shared how the project and the idea of staying away from the known factions of the Star Wars universe came to fruition.

A hundred percent. I think all of the Star Wars movies, in particular the original trilogy and Solo and Rogue One, were the founding texts.

Gerighty continued,

But when we started working with Lucasfilm, we were always coming back to, “What is a scoundrel? What is this archetype within the Star Wars galaxy?” But even wider than that, there are many scoundrels that are super interesting to look at.

He said that even Pirates of the Caribbean or Indiana Jones are interesting for inspiration. The theme of being a scoundrel is present in early previews and will be a running theme for the overall adventure. Kay Vess will provide players with a worm’s eye view of the galaxy and will not be a part of any faction like the Rebellion or the Empire.

The original trilogy was an exciting time for the franchise but the films did not touch upon what it is like being an ordinary citizen in a war-torn galaxy until Ubisoft. It is a breath of fresh air to see a project that is set in a shared universe but does not necessarily rely heavily on what came before.

It rather organically branches out and tells an original and authentic story. Ubisoft knew the stakes and Lucasfilm Games gave the team the encouragement and support needed to share Kay’s story in Star Wars Outlaws.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws Is About a Scoundrel, Not a Rebel

Star Wars Outlaws will not be like any other Star Wars game or movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story subtly introduced the concept of a Galactic Empire citizen choosing to ignore the conflict. Ubisoft’s developers have embraced this notion, believing it can evolve into a narrative that delves into the life of a scoundrel within the criminal underworld.

Characters from films like Jabba the Hutt will be involved in the game and perhaps others as well that will serve as a loose connection to the larger lore and not just fan service.

It is wholesome to see creatives take inspiration from what came before and capitalize on it without deviating too far from the source material and honor the work made by George Lucas.
