However, some shows and films slipped under the radar while bigger titles took the top spot due to popularity. While these shows and films had brilliant scores and great writing, they did not get the eyes they deserved despite their greatness.

1. Nimona – Film

Netflix released many acclaimed animated films and shows this year such as Blue Eyed Samurai and Leo. One of the most acclaimed films that was out on the streaming platform was Nimona. Starring the voice talents of Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed, Nimona was based on a graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. The show is set in a futuristic world that follows medieval traditions. The fantasy film was produced by Annapurna Pictures and premiered at the Annecy International Animation Festival and received rave reviews.

2. Bodies – TV Show

The streaming platform has given many wonderful sci-fi thrillers in the past such as Stranger Things and Dark. This year, it was the British show Bodies that made waves. The thriller is set during four different ages, in 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053, with characters in that age trying to solve the mystery of an unknown dead body that appears in each time period. The show stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Amaka Okafor, Stephen Graham, and Shira Haas. The show received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% and received favorable reviews.

3. Hunger – Netflix Original Film

If you are a fan of The Bear or Whiplash, the Thai drama Hunger is the perfect watch. The film follows a street cook Aoy, played by Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying who joins the culinary industry of fine dining and struggles with the pressures of the industry, accentuated by her abusive mentor Chef Paul. The film was announced by Netflix in 2022 in its slate of original productions in Thailand and was released earlier this year to positive reviews.

4. Lockwood & Co. – Netflix Original TV Show

Another British thriller that was well-received by critics was the Netflix original series Lockwood & Co. Based on the novel series by Jonathan Stroud, the show was developed by Joe Cornish, who is known for his work with Edgar Wright on the films The Adventures of Tintin, and Ant-Man. The show is set in an alternate reality in Britain where ghosts and ghouls rise from the graves regularly, which can only be sensed by kids. Hence, agencies run by children are hired to detect and dispose of ghosts. The show follows the protagonist who joins a small agency run by two young boys called Lockwood & Co. The show received positive responses from critics and audiences, and the show was in the global top ten for three weeks. However, the show was canceled after one season.

If you are in the mood for a good old teen comedy then Adam Sandler’s You’re So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is sure to be a fun watch. The film was released earlier this year to favorable reviews and stars Sandler, along with his wife and kids, with his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler being the protagonists. The film follows the story of two best friends who fight over the same boy and is based on a book by Fiona Rosenbloom. The film was lauded for its depiction of teenage angst and the performances of the lead cast.
