Andrew Garfield’s return as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire will forever be one of the most memorable moments in the entirety of cinema. The last time the actor was seen in one of his most recognized roles, as Peter Parker, was in the 2014 film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Many fans of this version of the character have been begging for the actor to wear the suit ever since this film came out, however, this only came true after Tom Holland took over the role, that too in the third part of his trilogy.
The weeks leading up to this film’s release were not a walk in the park for anyone involved in the project, as they all had voiced in the months after it came out. Garfield also voiced this a number of times, including talking about how interview processes were extremely challenging and stressful for him, so much so, that he ended up making a game out of it.
Andrew Garfield’s Had To Lie A Lot
Any project under Marvel Studios is cloaked in layers of secrecy, not only from the audiences but also from those involved with the projects. There are a number of extreme measures taken and it seems that nothing is off the table when it comes to them trying to avoid spoiling upcoming projects. While this is nothing new in this franchise, it was even more the case when it came to the 2021 film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. One of the biggest reasons for this was the fact that characters from past projects, those being Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield‘s films, would make an appearance in this film.
While it was confirmed that a few actors, like Willem Dafoe, and Alfred Molina would be reprising their roles, two of the most anticipated people, Garfield and Maguire, who fans wanted to appear in this film were said to not appear. The weeks leading up to the release of this film were not only hard for those who were part of the cast of the film but also for Garfield, as he was doing press for his recently released film, Tick, Tick… Boom!.
The reason for this was the constant questions that were being asked about the appearance of the two previous Spider-Men in the film. Garfield went on to mention later on that he had to lie in every interview he gave during this time as he was constantly asked this question, regardless of the fact that he was promoting a different film altogether.
Andrew Garfield Hates to Lie
Andrew Garfield revealed to The Wrap that it was very difficult for him to lie as much as he had to during the interviews. The actor revealed that there would be moments where he would get frustrated because he absolutely hated lying.
“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game.” he went on, “And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do,”
However, with how long he had to do this, the actor started to make a game out of this. He went on to reveal that he started to stop acting like himself and instead act like a fan of the character and talk about that, which wasn’t very hard for him to do.
