In 2020 Lucasfilm announced filmmaker Patty Jenkins would be directing a Star Wars film, focusing on a group of starfighter pilots known as Rogue Squadron. However, the studio shelved the project last year by the studio caused by Jenkins’ scheduling conflicts with other movies, including the canceled Wonder Woman 3.
However, the filmmaker has now shared promising updates about her Star Wars project, stating that she’s working on the script for the film titled Rogue Squadron. She has also shared that through this film, she wants to honor her late father, who served as a fighter pilot.
Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars Film Will Honor Her Late Father
Filmmaker Patty Jenkins has recently shared that she could return to write and direct the Star Wars film Rogue Squadron which was initially announced in 2020. During an interview with Talking Pictures Podcast, she shared that after losing Wonder Woman 3, she found herself looking back at her deal with Lucasfilm. Jenkins shared,
“When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, oh, we gotta finish this deal. We finished the deal right as the strike was happening. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars and so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?”
Patty Jenkins further expressed her admiration for the beauty and depth of the Star Wars franchise, emphasizing its significance in a world shaped by events like World War II. “It’s born out of how do you make a metaphor and talk in metaphor, right?” she shared.
The Wonder Woman director also revealed a personal aspiration to create a fighter pilot movie, saying, “It’s been a dream.” In an earlier clip, she explained how her late father Capt. William T. Jenkins, a U.S. Air Force pilot who served during the Vietnam War, inspired her to make a fighter pilot movie.
Jenkins shared that by combining her love for high-speed thrill and the Star Wars universe, she wants to honor her late father with “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.” Disney or Lucasfilm, however, have not shared any further updates about Rogue Squadron since its removal from the schedule in 2022.
DC Studios Canceled Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3
Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film starring Gal Gadot as the DC superhero Wonder Woman was a huge hit, prompting a sequel, which was released in 2020. The sequel, however, performed poorly at the box office. But Fans were still excited for a threequel, hoping to get a Wonder Woman trilogy.
While Jenkins and Gadot were expected to return with a third installment in the Wonder Woman film series, it was canceled after the DC superhero universe underwent a restructuring by the new co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Initial reports claimed that the filmmaker walked away from the threequel due to creative differences, but she later clarified the situation through a tweet. The Monster director explained that the project had already been terminated due to changes within the DCU and that there was nothing she could do to save the film.
“I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me,” she said before adding, “It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time.” Reports still claimed that Gadott could reprise her role under Gunn’s DCU.
However, a report from Variety later revealed that no cast member from Zack Snyder’s films would reprise their roles. including the Wonder Woman star. Meanwhile, James Gunn has announced a project focusing on Amazonian warriors, Paradise Lost, which will focus on the formation of their society on Paradise Island long before the birth of Princess Diana.
