Scooby-Doo, the infamous cowardly dog, and his gang of mystery solvers are a beloved part of our childhood. Having started as a cartoon, it has led to several sequels, cross-media adaptations, live-action, and more, and thus, has become no less than a cultural phenomenon today.
Yet, not all reboots, crossovers, or even characters have been as successful among fans. And for the past year, it has been the animated reboot Velma that has been drawing the wrath of Scooby fans. In a surprising turn of events, the most hated character of the mythos, Scrappy-Doo, seemed to have redeemed himself by killing another most hated character of the franchise, Velma!
Scrappy-Doo Redeems Himself By Killing Velma!
The Scooby-Doo franchise is huge and features several characters, yet not all characters have been as well-received by fans. And Scrappy-Doo, undeniably, seems to have drawn the ire of fans since he made his debut in 1979. The Great Dane puppy, however, has faced tough competition from another recently added character to the franchise for the spot of Most Hated Scooby-Doo Character, aka Velma.
An adult animated comedy mystery series, Velma features a South-Asian version of Velma Dinkley voiced by the executive producer of the series, Mindy Kaling. Since the premiere of the series, it has been criticized for numerous reasons, ranging from its shallow humor and hateful jokes to its woke concept (see NME).
And if the second season’s finale is to be taken into consideration, Scrappy-Doo has lost the title of the franchise’s Most Hated Character by killing Kaling’s Velma. Titled Til Death, the finale featured Velma trying to defeat Scrappy-Doo, who is on a murderous rampage.
One thing leads to another, and Velma, trying to play the hero, loses her life to the blood-soaked teeth of the Great Dane. While she does manage to re-emerge as a ghost and ends up killing Scrappy-Doo instead, fans are celebrating the Great Dane puppy’s very noble deed.
Fans React to Scrappy-Doo Killing Velma
Scrappy-Doo is more like an annoying kid that keeps bugging and following you in one of those annoying family functions, and you are forced to tolerate them, on the pretext of being nice and kind. In the context of the animated series, fans were forced to tolerate Scrappy-Doo just so they could enjoy a few moments with their favorite characters.
Many fans also disliked the Great Dane Puppy because his introduction to the mythos coincided with the fall of the quality of Scooby-Doo cartoons. More recently, fans were etched in the debate about who they hate more, Velma or Scrappy-Doo after the character made his way into the reboot series.
And after he ended up killing Velma, fans feel the character has finally redeemed himself after decades of fan hate.

As fans continue to celebrate, they also hope that the series is not renewed for a third season. Several fans also declared that the whole fandom owes the character a huge apology for decades of hate.
Velma can be streamed on Amazon Prime’s HBO Max channel.
