Not only did the anime succeed as an independent production, but it also brought more positive attention to Cyberpunk 2077, the original game. An interview with the show’s producer, Saya Elder, further opportunities for the series and further adaptations of the game.

Saya Elder was quick to confess that nothing could be said for certain regarding a new addition to the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime. However, the producer also accepted in the interview that the team was drawn to the unique style of Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind the anime.

I know that we were drawn to their unique style, uncompromising passion for their projects, and love for the cyberpunk genre. I’m confident that a huge part of why Edgerunners turned out the way it did is due to Studio Trigger’s hands-on attitude throughout.

That said, the producer also explained that Night City, the universe created by Mike Pondsmith for Cyberpunk 2077 is too versatile and vast not to be explored again. The Night City was adapted into an open-world concept by Cyberpunk 2077 as well as in the anime.

Elder confessed that a lot of options are also being explored outside the game. Some of the other adaptations include Gangs of Night City, a board game by CMON as well as other comic books which were published by Dark Horse.

The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly rich place when it comes to storytelling, whatever medium it may be, that I’m certain we will be delivering more tales of its denizens in the future.

Thus, new adaptations are definitely on the horizon, but they may or may not be another season of the anime.

The Next Cyberpunk 2077 Adaptation Might Not Be Anime

In the interview, Saya Elder praised Studio Trigger for their dedication to the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime. However, they seemed reluctant to admit that it might receive a second season of an anime spinoff. In fact the anime contained a closed story that does not need any immediate expansion.

Yet, Cyberpunk Edgerunners was a hit on Netflix and even received nominations for Crunchyroll Awards in 13 categories. It won the Anime of the Year award at the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Needless to say, Netflix has also received a huge gain from featuring the series.

There will definitely be another adaptation of the Cyberpunk 2077 game but this time, it is more likely to be a live-action series. Netflix has figured out that live-action series are especially good at gathering a wide audience base, and this might be the next step for the franchise as well.
