2016’s Suicide Squad was a nightmare for fans as the film did not turn out the way they hoped it would. The incoherent narrative, a forgettable villain, and inconsistent characterizations prevented it from being a great film. Despite it being a box office hit, David Ayer himself has expressed disdain for the theatrical cut and has revealed that he has a superior cut of the film.

For the past few years, the director has talked about how he had made one of the best comic book films ever made and the studio butchered his vision for the film. Ayer has even discussed the possibility of releasing his cut of the film with current DC head James Gunn, but they have been radio silent about the matter (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Audiences have developed a real interest in the director’s cut of the film and the ‘Release the Ayer Cut’ campaign has been going on for quite a while. Ayer is not giving up on his efforts and recently on the 8th anniversary of the film, he released a few pictures from his cut of the film. Diablo sacrificed his life for the team in the theatrical version of the film as he embraced his pyrokinetic abilities. In addition to the aforementioned photo, Ayer also shared a fan-made poster of his cut of Suicide Squad on X with the caption “#ReleaseTheAyerCut”. The director is clearly enthusiastic about his film and wants the world to see it in a way that was originally envisioned.

David Ayer made the 2014 World War II action film Fury starring Brad Pitt, Jon Bernthal, and Shia LaBeouf. The film remains one of his best works and audiences have been wanting to see him do a similar film in that setting. In an interview with Above the Line, Ayer revealed that he is dying to do another WWII film.

Despite having a specific idea about it, he wants to mature and grow a bit more as a director to pull it off. Ayer also teased his next film Levon’s Trade which reunites him with Jason Statham after the hit The Beekeeper. The director said,

I’m dying to do another World War II movie. I really want to do a World War II movie again and have a very specific idea about it. But I’m waiting to mature as a director and a writer, so I can actually pull it off because it’s so important to me.

I want to be able to meet it at the level I see it. I’m actually heading out to the UK to work on this movie called Levon’s Trade with Jason, based on the Chuck Dixon book series. He’s a big Marvel guy, wrote on Punisher, and things like that.

It will be great to see Ayer attempt another gritty and serious WWII film featuring an ensemble cast similar to Fury. For now, he has finished shooting Levon’s Trade with Statham in the lead. The film will also star David Harbour, Michael Peña, Noemi Gonzalez, Emmett J. Scanlan, and Jason Flemyng.

Levon’s Trade hits theatres on January 17, 2025.
