Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has created several cinematic moments for moviegoers to behold. While adding the subtle mannerisms of the king of the monsters, Adam Wingard took the ultimate inspiration from his pet cat.
When Godzilla rises from the depths of the ocean and curls up inside the Colosseum in Rome, that scene particularly reflects the similar mannerisms of a cat. Wingard candidly discussed how his cat inspired him and Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki.
Adam Wingard Explains His Inspiration From Cats
Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now roaring at the box office with an astounding buzz alongside the movie. While the critics were not in favor of the movie in general, fans have embraced it with open arms, which is well reflected in the soaring box office and Rotten Tomatoes audience scores claiming 92% love from fans. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has several cinematic visuals that are just delightful to the eyes, but beyond the aesthetics, the subtle mannerisms in The Titans have elevated the core essence.
Particularly, Godzilla’s mannerisms were inspired by Wingard’s cat. Speaking with Cinema Blend, the director revealed:
“I’m glad you brought that up because my favorite thing in the world to talk about is my cat. And my cat Mischief was the inspiration for that. It actually came about where my production designer was at my place and we were creating concept art for the film, and we had discussed the idea of where is Kong or Godzilla going to hibernate, and there was my cat just curled up in her cat nest, and that’s where we came up with the idea. ‘Well, what if we took Godzilla and, you know, made him curl up similarly in the Roman Coliseum?’”
Certainly, many moviegoers would believe the behaviors to be profound and subtle. The hibernation scene of the Titan in the Roman Coliseum is an acute reflector of that.
Takashi Yamazaki Did The Same In Godzilla Minus One
Last year, Takashi Yamazaki enjoyed the success of a Monseteverse movie with his highly acclaimed Godzilla Minus One. He went on to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in the movie. Wingard, who talked to Yamazaki while making his Monsterverse movie, said that the Japanese director was also very much inspired by his cat.
“It’s really funny because my cat Mischief has been a big inspiration for both Godzilla vs. Kong and this film for Godzilla’s mannerisms. And just recently, I had a discussion with Yamazaki, who directed Godzilla Minus One, and it turns out that his cat was his number one inspiration for his approach to Godzilla. So I don’t know what it is about these cats mind-controlling their owners, but for whatever reason, Godzilla directors are taking a lot of inspiration from them.”
Cat owners might be happy knowing how these adorable creatures can inspire two giant movies that have claimed global attention.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now showing in theaters.
